Most NTSC players wont play PAL. Most PAL will play NTSC though

This question probably asked on a daily basis here on the cow.
Bottom line is that you need to have a NTSC uncompressed or lossless 16×9 Anamorphic 720×480 (29.97 or 23.98) sequence to start off with – this is DVD resolution. PAL 720×576
Do not pass go or collect anything unless you nested you edited sequence into a 720×480 (29.97 or 23.98)
From there Export with compressor and set up your encoding parameters accordingly. If you plan on using another encoder you would export out an uncompressed QT and send that into the encoder

Alot more tool and utilities, better encoders and you can actually playback on a PC. Toast is fine but it limits bitrates. Lots of free authoring and encoding options as well for PC.
$400 will get you great system

Just a couple corrections:
CBR vs VBR has nothing to do with discs skipping. If your bitrates are low enough and you avoid those bitrate spikes that VBR introduces you’re fine either way.
Also…ALL players are required to support AC3 and PCM audio. Again, this will not effect playablity unless PCM audio sends you over the top as I explained above.
so the type of compression parameters or audio has nothing to do will making the player feel better…its all about overall bitrates
And…BTW….Compressor is a crappy MPEG 2 encoder 🙂

I actually hate compressor for MPEG 2 encoding but its great for down and up conversions. For an add on tool that is 🙂 I personally dont use Compressor for anything but many folks here dont need or want another encoder. I love Bitvice though

Thanks Ben…good info. A faster way would be to nest your clip into a 720×480 sequence and export out of FCP through Compressor. Glad to see youre happy. BTW….Just so you know, this question is probably asked an average of 3 times a week on this forum 🙂

First thing is that HD DVD is a dead format so you dont wont to make one of those. Apple should remove it from DVDSP.
4×3 is not anamorphic. Your anamorphic images look squeeze within a 720×480 package. Once encoded 16×9 they are played back correctly.
