Have done both, and haven’t noticed any difference.

Depending on machine and codec, you will sometimes “lose” render files when copying form one timeline to another. But with 720p 23.98 DVC Pro you should be fine.

I usually copy and paste because it’s easier during the QC process, but if that’s not something you’re doing then Individual sequence renders, then one final output should work fine.

If that is the fix that works, then you may have a corrupt project…

Those are really the only reasons, that I know of, that cause a need for audio to be rendered. As far as losing sync after an edit, that isn’t a compressed audio track or sub par sample rate, you may be unintentionally slipping picture or audio when trimming.

How are you performing your trim edits? there are certain trim functions that slip picture.

Have you tried trashing the Preferences?

Why don’t you just rip the DVD’s? They don’t have timecode, so it seems like a wasted effort going through FCP. If you need a reel number add it after you import to FCP. If you need a particular codec just transcode while ripping.

Do this with mpeg streamclip, you may need to get mpeg-2 QT component, $20, from Apple to make this work, but it’s way faster than real time. Also, if you have flash player and perian on your computer, you can pretty much transcode anything under the sun with this piece of Freeware. Mpeg Streamclip is written by Squared 5. I use it most every day and it’s great. Does a fantastic job.

For other analogue sources, not sure. I’m not a Decklink user. But for DVD’s, this is definitely a good workflow.

If the clips were finished encoding, then they should still be in your capture drive.

Also, unless you turned autosave off for some reason, it defaults to 30 min’s so at least some of your work, if you were only logging and transferring should still be there.

Access your autosave vault under File>Restore project. after you select restore project it should be fairly self explanatory.

The foolishness was more in the vein that you had already dismissed, and not a slight. They are also easily overlooked items in troubleshooting.

does the ioHD have a control panel, anything similar to the kona? If it does that is were the up/down/cross conversion would be set to. It will also tell you exactly what is being sent to the deck.

You may also be having a conflict in your reference if you are using reference.

any audio that you have to render in FCP is questionable.

How many tracks are you working with?

If you are using mp3’s or equally compressed audio, convert it to either WAV or AIFF. You may also be having sample rate conflicts. you want your audio to be 48k preferably.

Also, if you are using more tracks than your system is set to handle in realtime that will cause the need to render.

You can change this in the user preferences.

What codec are you exporting to?

You could probably use Photo-jpeg, I’m pretty sure there’s a PNG motion codec also. I’ve seen both at wonky aspects.

You can use QT if you want.

For overall ease of use, speed and quality I’d say use mpeg streamclip (squared 5 makes it). it’s free super easy and is built upon QT. Google it and you will find it.

As far as codecs inside of FCP, keep pretty much all MPEG formats (mpeg-1, mpeg-2, mpeg-4 – H264 is MPEG-4 variant) out. Exceptions such as HDV (Mpeg-2 variant), kind of, and AVC-Intra (I frame version of H264) exist.

For transcoding H264, I personally, like transcoding to PHOTO-jpeg 100% (not supported by RT Extreme, but is I frame and really clean). For what it is it’s small and you don’t really lose anything. Render times are big, will probably be pretty big in HDV no matter what though due to the Long GOP encoding. You can also use Pro Res, also a very good option.

The Cow has tons of great stuff, Ken Stone, the FCP manual covers some of this stuff and wikipedia…

Tons of places to get good information, I don’t have one source.
