    But the only mpeg2 options I see in compressor are 720p and 1080i. Can you get 1080p24 mpeg2 out of compressor?

    Are you encoding as progressive video? If you aren’t, then you are seeing the interlacing. You can see also this issue on commercial DVD’s. Use progressive and the problem wil be solved.

    The only problem with XML is the older version, which you have to use to import into FCP4.5, does not handle the audio from FCP5 very well. you will run into things like stereo becoming dual mono on the timeline and stuff. Good luck convincing your boss on the upgrade, sounds like you are going to have to take it down a notch at home.

    Are you seeing interlacing? Sounds like you need to import it into Photoshop and apply the de-interlace filter:
    FILTER > VIDEO > DE-INTERLACE
