I recently upgraded to FCP 5.0. When I bring my project file home from work (running 4.5), my home system (5.0) wants to update it. If I do this, and work on the project at home, will I be able to take that project file back to work and open it with the 4.5 system? If not, is there any work around, other than convincing my boss to upgrade to 5.0?

do not update, as fcp 4.5 is not backwards compatible with fcp 5. Convince your boss to upgrade or install fcp 4.5 at home…or, you can export xmls or edls and try it that way.

The only problem with XML is the older version, which you have to use to import into FCP4.5, does not handle the audio from FCP5 very well. you will run into things like stereo becoming dual mono on the timeline and stuff. Good luck convincing your boss on the upgrade, sounds like you are going to have to take it down a notch at home.
