November 27, 2013 at 9:22 pm in reply to: this is a GREAT article on Thunderbolt shared networksWith a 2 device direct connect only without any other device chaining yes. Add other devices and other clients to the TB network chain, then no way it’s lower with the latency issues I am seeing. Also keep in mind 10Gbe has low latency profiles that 1Gbe does not. Many may not even be aware or using those. Oh and 10Gbe has definitely come down in price in the last year. The adapters alone are $350 to $550 and the switches are now under $1K.

I would run a parity check now or move data off and rebuild the volume. Had the Raid volume info been clean, you should have seen your data with just 1 bad drive. I would not trust that raid volume data yet.

November 27, 2013 at 6:01 pm in reply to: this is a GREAT article on Thunderbolt shared networksWhat that review did show was the potential latency issues with the network packet mode. That is the hurdle TB must climb versus standard network topologies. That is also the main issue I have with the current expectations of TB2. The bandwidth is great however the latency can really limit the results and cause potential troubleshooting nightmares. This would make the TB2 setup far more complicated than a standard network. All of this really reminds me of the Token Rings and the arguments back then and that of course didn’t last.

November 20, 2013 at 10:15 pm in reply to: Exporting 1hr video with PNG codec – 26 hours exporting time! You definitely want more ram with the MPE. 12GB would be minimum with 24GB ideal on that system. A 660TI or 760GTX would be the video cards to look at.

What Raid level are you running? If a parity raid, have you ran a parity verification recently?

Can you turn it on and set the ram per thread to 1.5GB and see how it ram previews? Then try 3GB of ram per thread. make sure you only leave 6 GB of ram for other applications.

November 15, 2013 at 5:52 pm in reply to: Capturing real time video stream from BlackMagic ATEM TV Studio through Intensity Pro into PremierePro?I have captured with the Atem series directly via USB3 and not via the Intensity card. I have tested the Intensity with Premiere many times and never had issues with it beyond a driver occasionally and the capture crashing some. However there is only DVCPro HD as an option in Premiere besides what Media Express already supports and Mjpeg is far better. Matter of fact Mjpeg is the most commonly used codec for archival because of the size to quality ratio. I am surprised that is not acceptable. I would suggest you look at Cineform if you don’t like Mjpeg. Last I checked you can capture directly from Blackmagic cards into Cineform with the HDlink utility. Cineform is by far best codec option out. It’s just a paid option in this scenario.

The 680GTX has far better performance so the workflow options expand significantly depending on the media you deal with. In another words you have a far higher performance ceiling with the 680GTX card before rendering the timeline for preview becomes a must.

Adobe CC will allow the hardware acceleration with Nvidia cards whether it’s on the supported list or not. The message is warning now that it’s not officially supported or tested. However last I checked Media Encoder would not use the hardware MPE acceleration if it wasn’t on the supported list so we still add the cards so they are. The last Adobe update may have fixed that but I haven’t tested it yet.
