Premiere runs fine on both minus bugs limited to the 10.9 release. However the PC will always have better performance configuration options than the Imac due to the hardware limitations of the Imac. If Imac fits your workflow and media it may not even matter. If it doesn’t then obviously the PC is the better option.

The 680GTX would definitely work and the 780GTX would work but will be out of official power spec. You can always add another PSU as an option though.

I see allot of very experienced editors and technology industry people in the Cow forums who give very valuable info including How to’s and problem/workflow resolution information every day. I understand there is allot of excitement about TB2 and the new Mac Pro’s. For many, both seem to answer allot of requirements they have needed for some time while remaining in the Mac Domain. I and others are simply pointing out that this excitement can turn into problems when purchased. These problems can turn into no end of failure to work with applications or workflows required and these over all are not inexpensive investments. I am simply pointing out that Apple has some really strong marketing behind TB and there are pitfalls here with regards to technological limitations and the current editing applications/workflows. Whether that is enough to give some one pause to consider this further or not is their choice and not mine. However I will present the info or even the questions I have about a new technology whether good or bad.

Go into System and then the advanced tab. Select settings under performance. Then for Visual effects make sure it’s set to “let Windows choose what’s best for the computer”. Outside of that the only thing I can think of to try is make sure the Video driver is up to date for 8.1 if that is what you have.

There is allot of communication going on just between all of the cards when using the Rocket and Blackmagic besides the GPU for the acceleration. The latency of that is likely why your running into dropping frames. The CPU’s are also not ideal for this type of work to get the data down to the GPU’s very fast so that is another bottleneck. How much ram do you have in the system?
The Red Rockets can only be used for decoding/encoding outside of Cinex. You can use them fore Preview inside Cinex only.
Don’t worry about the sequence settings prompted by dropping the media if the editing resolution/aspect ration is correct. Just accept the match media prompt.

Go into Sequence settings and check mark max bit depth and max quality under preview. See if that changes it. If not change the Hardware MPE to Software MPE mode under Project settings. Delete the Preview files when it prompts.

You have to be careful with reviews. There are allot of variables here such as network adapter configuration settings that impact latency and performance. There is also the plug n play mentality that clients expect to just plug it in and it works. That does not mean it works at peak or ideal performance. The Intel 10Gbe adapters alone have profile settings in the advance settings that set the adapters advance settings to specific workflows including low latency. If these are not set then some workflows will be negatively impacted. I have yet to have a client come back and say the Netgear switches do not work as advertised and as you state there is nothing else in that price range right now. These are a small business solution and for what they do, there is nothing better right now.

If you don’t find another workflow option, maybe try converting the DNG to Cineform instead and keep it that way back into Davinci so you don’t have to reference the DNG files in an XML.

I have done differential tests with DNG to Cineform and the difference is negligible. The conversion to Cineform is extremely quick if you don’t need to bring into AE first. Maybe go try it and see first? I know 1 person was already reporting how nice it was in another forum here.

Have you looked at just importing to AE for Raw changes and then export to Cineform for Premiere work? You can also just convert to Cineform Raw in the first place.
