None of the software out currently can handle Red 4K at full resolution preview yet. There is just to much latency in the decoding processing for that. The Redcine Pro X version with GPU Debayer can handle it but that’s the only 1 right now. And the Geek bench scores you use don’t completely reflect GPU acceleration and the pipeline. There is still a considerable difference between the 12 Core upgrade you can get with the 2x Xeons and the Xeon E5 2697 V2 12 core. That will still far outperform the platform you have especially with the ram bandwidth which is critical to GPU acceleration. Also there is far more bandwidth available in PCI-E Gen 3 which the 780GTX can use but just is rarely pushed to.

Well you can use HDMI since DVI-D converts to HDMI but the software has to support the resolution your looking at. SDI would be another option but then you need to get a converter. Why cant you output from the PC system via HDMI at 4K resolution and then just record it that way?

Definitely need more ram. 8GB is way to low for AE work. I highly suggest you get to 16GB or 32GB ideally.

What happens if you go under Sequence settings and select Max Render Quality for Preview?

No the Drive speed is not limiting you to 1/4 resolution for preview. The CPU processing is. If 1/4 Resolution for playback is fine for you then you are good with a raid 0 setup. If not then you are at the limits of that Mac without a Rocket card. Red is extremely CPU intensive to decode and threads very well in Adobe. If you have the threads such as my 12 Core/24 Thread E5 V2 Xeon PC then 1/2 resolution is handled easily even at 4.5 or 5K. That is the difference between the CPU’s you have and the current Ivy-E platform.

You will find your processing for Red at 4K will be limited by the CPU’s more than the storage with the 2009 Mac Pro. An E-Sata raid 0 would be fast enough to handle the red files. An internal raid 0 would also handle it. Beyond that you will likely be looking at a new system if you move to a 4K workflow.

When I have time at work I will get you the 4930K results at stock and 4.4GHz. I will try to run on a Xeon E5 12 Core 2697 V2 on an X79 as well when we have 1 up or I get time at home on my system.

CUDA is Nvidia only. Open CL is the only option with those AMD cards.

Lagarith has been a go to codec on Windows with Adobe for a while. You can always convert the Lagarith to Cineform Quicktime if you need to move the media over to a Mac system. Then they can just install the free version of Cineform to read the codec.

The ram is really what you need. If you upgraded the ram on the current laptop, that would significantly improve your AE performance on that unit. AE uses far more ram than most other applications. That often is over looked resulting in poor user experience.
