There is no reason to digitize everything twice.

Just Unlink the audio tracks – Apple+L – and you will be able to to move the audio and video independantly of each other. A simple Apple+L will join the new clips back together on the timeline so that they behave as if they were digitised that way.

I’m assuming you mean a Mac Pro, not a G5?

Regardless, you will do well to get yourself even a modest striped array – you will be able to do it (just) with 7200rpm drives (even the FW800), but it will give you problems once the drive starts filling.

The Mac Pros have more than enough space inside to stick in 2 additional media hard drives, and RAID them in OSX. You’ll enjoy very few hiccups / frame drops and multiple streams will be a little easier. If you go external, consider the RAID drives from Lacie – you’ll have to go into the 1 to 2 TB range (I think) to find them.

    My two cents.

March 14, 2007 at 12:49 am in reply to: Onlining DVCPRO HD

Being that DVCProHD is a fairly low-bitrate for HD, I would consider cutting in that format. Simply because DV doesn’t support 24 fps – by editing in DVCProHD which does, you avoid the whole pulldown headache.

A firewire 800 external drive, or an internal two-drive RAID would be more than adequate to cut in that codec.

As for the upconvert, some HD capture cards will let you digitise via the component-style HD, letting you upconvert more effectively to 1080 from 720, without using the software conversion to do it – you will likely get a better result that way.

    My two cents.

March 13, 2007 at 9:35 pm in reply to: monitoring audio

Monitoring off your deck is best, in my opinion. Especially if you are outputting for video (eg not exclusively for web).

You will get a better reference for your colours, and minimise potential latency/sync issues in your final product. You will also get a better idea of what your audio sounds like off tape while digitising – I find the audio monitoring in the Capture window to not be accurate to what’s actually on the tape.

Don’t monitor video through your deck and audio through G5 – sync will be out.

Can you use YouTube? You can even block the videos from being viewed by the general public, only by the users you specify. It’s pretty quick and 100% free.

I don’t think FCP will run on the Macbooks, only Macbook Pros.

Yes, the Mac Pros have dual-head video cards if you want two monitors, but as CaptM said, definitely use a video monitor for your video.

Any software is going to have issues – it’s software after all – but having been a Premiere user way back when, they had a lot of catching up to do compared to where FCP was already at. I was forced to move from Premiere and Windows because it just wasn’t cutting it (no pun intended;o), and I have never looked back.

We are about to set up 4 x MacPros with FC Studio, Shake etc for a TV series we are doing – I wouldn’t dare with a Premiere based setup.

Add to that the streamlined workflow that FCS has, it’s hard to pass up. It’ll be more expensive to go FCS, but I would suggest that you won’t be disappointed.

    Good luck!

Best solution would be to redigitise your tapes into FCP.

Anything you do with the Avid media will recompress and it will look terrible. Best res for Digi would obviously be uncompressed, but you will need more than an iMac to do that.

The only foolproof way of porting stuff over (in my experience) would be something like Automatic Duck. The other ways you’ve mentioned should all work in theory, but these systems are not designed to talk to each other – you could be setting yourself up for a world of pain.

Have you thought your post-path through? Why the last minute switch from Avid? How will you be delivering?

Once you have the obvious connections made and the host machine on, reboot the eMac while holding down the T key. This will mount the eMac onto your host machine as a drive.

February 27, 2007 at 9:51 pm in reply to: 3D Curved plane in AE

    Thanks for that guys.

What we are doing is creating a 3D ‘room’ for a keyed actor to move around in.

I never thhought of using 3D invig that way – it’s an interesting thought and I will look into it – but we have ended up going a slightly different route which means that we will be using flat planes in an open space so it’s now less urgent for this gig.

Thanks very much for your rapid response… appreciate it.
