If you only want to duplicate some of the layers (your animation) within your comp, select all the layers you want to duplicate within your composition, and Layer > Precompose. This will create a ‘sub-comp’ that has all the layers within it. Then select your pre-comp and Ctrl or Apple + D.

If your walk animation is the whole comp, find it in the project window, select it and use the same keystroke. You can then drag this copy to wherever you need it.

How much has already been shot? Finishing in 4×3 would give you consistency across all material. If you haven’t shot much so far, definitely go 16:9.

Todd’s right, though, you don’t want to do a blowup to 16:9 from 4:3 – would pillarboxing be an option for the 16:9 conversion?

Also, as a matter of interest – some countries (eg UK’s BBC) have found a compromise for their archival stuff which is in 4:3 – they blow it up slightly so that it is 14:9 aspect ratio. On a 16:9 screen it gives a small amount of pillarboxing, and crops a small amount off the top and bottom. The advantage is that it fills more screen than 4:3, and you don’t have to blow it up nearly as much.

Not suggesting this as an option – just as a matter of interest.

Dupe the comp or layer.

Open the scale properties.

Unlock the scale property so that you can scale X scale without affecting Y.

Set X scale to -100%

Go to the last frame of your comp (or wherever you want the layers to end). Select all the layers you want to extend, then left Alt + ] to extend / trim. Left Alt + [ will trim / extend from the start of the layer.

Note: This will only extend as far as there is footage in the layer to accomodate i.e. You cant extend a 30 second video clip to 60 seconds if your source video clip actually only goes for 30 seconds. You’ll need to loop in that instance.

You are not doing anything wrong – PAL 16:9 DV has the same number of pixels as 4:3: 720Wx576H.

What happens is that upon playback, if the file is flagged as anamorphic 16:9, it is stretched out horizontally. It is the same number of pixels, it is just displayed differently.

Now, if you are exporting a file for use in a VIDEO application (FCP editing, or to go to DVD, for example) then leave it this way, and make sure your settings are correct at the other end (eg, the anamorphic tick box is set for the file within FCP, or that your DVD is set to 16:9). If you are exporting for web, say, then you will have to correct your pixels accordingly as Andreas has suggested.

Sound like you’re on the right track, Jordan, but it’s your flare’s layer that’s the problem. You need to eliminate the black to see through to the QT.

Is there a reason you’ve put the flare on a black BG? Can you create the effect without a black solid? This would create an alpha that would show the QT.

Otherwise, trying applying a key to your flare to key out the black. You may need to precompose your flare layers first, though, and then apply the key to the pre-comp.

If you follow John’s option ‘A’, you would also be able to generate the text as a text layer in AE – this would allow you to easily edit the text without having to go back into PS for a typo… :o)

Welcome ganeshboy,

I have not personally used that model, nor have I had problems with my recorders recognising my mac’s firewire. I have two diff models of JVC (although I wouldn’t recommend them as they have other issues) and have had no probs – I use my one at home to convert to analog for my TV when I offline at home.

Import your replacement media.

Select it in the project window.

Select the layer you want to replace in the timeline.

Ctrl + Alt + /

This will swap the layer in the timeline for what you have selected in the project window without affecting any layer attributes.
