April 26, 2007 at 1:38 pm in reply to: Confused about MATTES.

    O.K.

    Layer 1 : Background ( Sky, 720 x 576 )
    Layer 2 : Grass Fill ( 720 x 576 )
    Layer 3 : Grass Matte ( 720 x 576 )

You can see that all these images fill a normal sized SD PAL frame, if you were to layer each of them you would only see the top layer, in this case the matte. What this matte does, when the travel matte luma composite mode is used, is to let you see the background,(sky), with only the white part of the grass showing, it ‘cuts the hole’ really. That hole is then filled with the Grass fill.
A matte and fill need to be the same length, size and speed, and each needs to be started at the correct frame for them to work properly, if not you get a lag and unsightly black edging, which is just plain wrong.
    I hope this helps…

I’ve got a filter in 55mm which has a good go at it, thing is you can tweak it quite a lot, which is nice, then take it into Motion and played around with the composite modes.

I think magic bullet also had a day for night filter.

As far as free, err…dupe your clip on to video2, color correct top layer, play with the composite modes…give it a go.

Oh, the other thing is, when you export to AIFF and group channel is allocated, it will give you s seperate file for each track, this means you have to match-up track 1 to file 1 and so on…

How many tracks have you got?

Yeah, you can do that, make sure you group the channels unless you will get a stereo mix of all your tracks. The only problem with doing that, and it could be a real ballache, is you won’t get any handles, or the option to extend out your audio clips if you need to. If, on the other hand your audio is going to an audio engineer, export it as an OMF with 1 second handles. I would’ve suggested you do this for what you are doing but as far as I know FCP can’t import OMF files!

    Hi,
I’m currently using audio that has 24bit integer depth and FCP works fine. If you don’t have loads and loads of footage, one way would be to load up each reel in a sequence send that sequence to Soundtrack Pro and export the audio as 16bit.aif.
Bit time consuming I know but it should work… I’ve done it before!

    Hi,
I use an App. called “AppDelete”. It was a free D/L from the Apple OSX downloads page, it promises to delete not only the application but any preference files and extra bits that are affiliated with the application you want to delete. I’ve had a good success rate with it too. You need to take care though, don’t really want to be deleting the wrong thing now!!!

You can export to Compressor direct from the Final Cut timeline, yes. I’d always render everything down though, before you export, I don’t think Compressor would like it if you didn’t. The other option, if you’ve got the time is to export an uncompressed Quicktime to your desktop or another drive, then drag this file to Compressor and transcode your heart out, if things go badly, you’ve always got your source QT in a handy place, instead of opening up your project sequence…

    Hello,
yes in answer to your question, it does it via an application called Compressor which is part of the Final Cut Studio. Some improvments have been made to the latest version, which starts shipping soon, the most important of which is you can now get .wmv and flash files out of it along with quicktime codecs and AIFF files, ready to stream, download or author to DVD.

April 23, 2007 at 9:54 am in reply to: minimum text size

    Hi,
I don’t know about general minimum test sizes, I suppose go as small as possible, as long as you can read it and you don’t get field flicker issues.
I do know that the minimum requirement for character sizes on legal information, stuff like T’s & Cs for competitions and the like, for one broadcaster in the U.K is 16 T.V lines. This measurement I have always done using a lower case white ‘v’ on a black background, then used a waveform monitor to measure it.
    Hope that helps…
