Just a few notes on the unit,
-The signal quality compared to the older analog SD systems and drop out rate is very impressive.
-Due to the HD signal capability you dont need to rent or buy additional downconvertors.
-The unit is considerably larger than older systems like canatrans or transvideo but runs cooler.
-This is unit is NOT for live broadcast but very acceptable for on set viewing.We found out we are using this unit for everything, dolly, jib, sticks, steadicam. It is very addictive.

We have an CW-5HD and love it. We use it primarily for steadicam operations and it works like a charm. I would highly recommend it.

I just spoke with my DIT to confirm and there is no way we know of to do that off the tape based Varicam. Sorry.

I was looking through the AJA website convertors just to make sure but I dont think there is a HD-SDI to firewire solution.
Are you just trying to bypass tape or do something else?

We have both the 2700 and 3000. We enjoy both cameras and use them depending on the project requirements.
If you are filming 3 hour presentations you can record 720P 24PN at DVCPROHD with 5 slots (32GB cards each) for 7.5 hours without stopping or swapping cards. 2700 only
AVC-I provides double the recording time over DVCPROHD with no loss. The 3000 is 1080 only so your options are a little more limited.
If I understand your needs correctly, the 2700 would have been a better choice for you.

Joe your question is infinitely deep, we have spent 9 months with the 3000 tweaking, testing and setting up. There is no simple answer, I would highly reccomend you attend Varicamp or Panasonic HD class in Rockport.
But to start as jeremy said if you can dump the firestore and get P2 cards.

Here is a project I just completed for the Navy. For the interviews we used 35mm adapters for shalow DOF and used a second camera to dolly around the subjects. Simple trick but looked nice. There are multiple shots but you can see one at 3:50 5:10 5:35.

That probably won’t hold up in court as you know what you are doing would be illegal. It’s like getting a “signed waiver” from your friend who asked you to drive you to a liquor store so he can rob it.

We have both cameras in house and it seems we seem to favor the 2700 more than the 3000.
-If we do FX work or compositing we favor the 3000 (%30) for the full raster chip set+10 bit workflow.
-On more standard shoots we use the 2700 (%70) for the flexibility for of variable frame rates.
Of course this will vary on client demand but “if” I had to choose I would opt out for the 2700 as in our market there seems to be more demand. You really cant go wrong at that level of quality.
