Hpx2700 Trade in or Used Hpx3000
Hi Guys,
I am in the market for a Hpx2700 or Hpx3000. With the camera trade up program the price is almost the same. If you had your choice which one would you choose. I have never used over cranking or undercranking so I do not know how much I would use/need the variable frame rates however the resolution of the HPX 3000 is. tempting.
Most of my commercials are not super high end but I like the look of the 2700 but for a normal commericals is it worth it. Also Which camera has better low light sensitiviy.

3000 series cameras are native 1920×1080 vs. 1280×720 imager for 2000 series. I think for high end it’s a no-brainer to pick the 1920 at the same price. The features and “look” should otherwise be very similar.

Also meant to add that used 3000 really has little downside, because with solid state recording there is no deck wear and tear to be concerned about. If camera works and cosmetics are satisfactory, other than warranty would be similar to new. I can’t imagine there being very many used 3000’s available however.

Many commercials call for overcranking or undercranking. The 2700 is rated at 640 ASA, 3000 is around 500 ASA. 3000 doesn’t do 720P, power consumption is a bit higher. Film-Rec goes up to 600% dynamic range with the 2700, 500% with the 3000. There are 3000’s available for $20K or so, including viewfinder, so it’s a lot of camera for the money.
I bought the 2700 because of its flexibility, but the 3000 is a very good choice and used value. I don’t believe the 5 year warranty is transferable, however.

Thanks for all the info. So if you where me what would you do. Buy the 2700 or the 3000. Seeing you already have a 2700 I am curious as to your suggestion. Thanks for all your help.

We have both cameras in house and it seems we seem to favor the 2700 more than the 3000.
-If we do FX work or compositing we favor the 3000 (%30) for the full raster chip set+10 bit workflow.
-On more standard shoots we use the 2700 (%70) for the flexibility for of variable frame rates.
Of course this will vary on client demand but “if” I had to choose I would opt out for the 2700 as in our market there seems to be more demand. You really cant go wrong at that level of quality.
