Try changing the Spin parameter’s graph from +Max to -Max, which should spin the particles in the opposite direction.

Yes, there are a good number of emitters that can be used to do this sort of effect. One of the Super Burst emitters in the August 2003 library is probably a good start, since it has both a flash of light and a burst of smoke. The Smokey Sparkle Burst emitters in December 2003 would also be a good start if you lower the Emission Range to 0, which gives the effect of the projectile blasting out with flash and smoke, rather than just the flash.

February 24, 2006 at 5:21 pm in reply to: It’s been a while – but just about to upgrade….Yup, just select the first frame of your sequence in the layer background import options, and you’ll get prompted on whether to use just that image or the whole sequence. This can even be done in version 2.

Then what you can do is go to the Active graph for the emitter, and slide the first point back from 120 to 1. That will start the emitter creating particles at the start even though you added it at 120.

I can’t recall ever having a problem importing pI images into Vegas. Can you open up any of those TGA files in a program other than Vegas, like an image viewer or paint program, or do you get an error too?

You need to render the explosion to a file format that supports alpha channels to let After Effects know where the transparent areas are. JPGs don’t have alpha channels, so you’ll need to render to either PNG, TIF, TGA or one of the other image formats, and then check the Save Alpha box in the Output Options.

You should consider only bringing in the portion of video/shot that you want to add particles too, rather than a clip of several minutes. Then when you’re done, you can just drop the clip into your editing/compositing program after a short render time, rather than rendering out a few minutes in pI.
After Effects would be fine for the compositing. Here’s a tutorial that will probably answer most questions you have when using the two together.

Search for the Panasonic DV Codec in Google, but be aware that installing it can cause you problems using some other codecs in your editing program (divx and xvid for sure, perhaps some others).
You may be able to use a frameserver depending on which editing program you use. You can grab the DebugMode one here. I find this the best way to move any footage from Vegas to pI, as it takes no time to render and there’s no compression issues.

You can use Layer Offset to move all the emitters on the layer, to follow the motion of the camera. Select the green Offset option at the top of hierarchy window, and position it somewhere distinct on your screen ( like the corner of the chimney). Then you can animate that to move the smoke emitter to follow the motion of the camera.
As EVideoM says, you can use a motion tracker (in AE Pro, SynthEyes, Smooth-Running Gun, Combustion) to track the precise motion and import that to move the Offset marker. That’ll really help if your footage was shot handheld.

In the Output Options, check the Save Alpha box to write transparency information with the images. You can also check the ‘Remove black bg from RGB channels’ box if you’re rendering against a black background.
