Could be that for whatever reason Virtualdub doesn’t like the MPEGs that your camera makes. Another possible solution is MediaCoder, though I haven’t used it myself.

Some of the FireWorks Fountains emitters in the December 2003 library would probably be a good starting point, since they have both a directional blast of smoke and a wide puff of smoke.

You’ve let the secret out! Now he’ll read your message and make adjustments to make the alpha channel useable! :p
Personally, when I release an emitter I know it will be used by people in their projects and they’ll get paid for it, and I’m okay with that. I’ve also thought many times about rendering some of my emitters out and selling them as stock footage, but I can’t justify giving an animation away in one medium (emitters), and selling that same animation in another medium (stock footage). Sure, I could justify it by saying that I took the time to render and package the stuff, so I’m charging for that service, but I’d hate to be that guy who pays $20 for the footage only to find out he could’ve got the same thing for free by buying some software that would make his life happier.

There are a ton of transporter effects, most recently I think in the December 2005 library. February 2004 also has quite a few.

There’s no way to bring MPG natively into particleIllusion or any sort of fix that would let you. Some video editing programs will let you import MPG and save it as AVI, but if yours doesn’t you can always grab VirtualDub, which will do that and a whole lot more.

Two things to try:
-Unzip the files to your computer before running the install, then run the Setup.
-Disable your virus protection before you try to install—

If you put the particles on layer 1, and the background on layer 2, then the particles will be below the background.

October 3, 2006 at 6:45 pm in reply to: 2 x Problems: Slowing Down Emiters and Output Video too fastThe frame rate issue you had sounds strange. Could it be that FCP is reading the file outputted from pI at the wrong frame rate, thinking its 24 instead of 25?
Slowing down an emitter will depend on a number of things. First, do the particles have Velocity? If they do, you’ll have to reduce that. If the particles have Spin, you’ll have to reduce it as well. Motion Randomness may be another.
Any of the Over Life attributes will be slowed down if you increase the Life of the particles, so that may help as well. So if the Size over Life graph has some animation on it, giving the particles a longer life will have them grow/shrink slower.

If you move point 1 over the reference point (the smaller point that appears between the two points when you create a line emitter), you can use the Angle graph to rotate point 2 around point 1.

Right-click on the emitter and choose Make Line, though that doesn’t create a start and end point, it just creates particles from across the entire line rather than from one point.
