You can move the Reference Point (that center small blue dot) and keys will be set. You can also move each point on its own in case you want to have the blocker follow along with a changing shape. It’s kind of best to set keys on either the Ref Point OR the blocker’s points, rather than both. If you first start moving the blocker points, then animate the reference point, your earlier points can move around, since the blocker points are linked to the reference.

February 20, 2007 at 12:40 am in reply to: trying to change setting for Logo — Converge Sides spriteThe easiest way to do this is to create a duplicate of the logo and just fade it up as the logo emitter is fading out. Check Aharon’s responses in this thread for more details.

If you hit Ctrl+M in the Library window, you’ll get a Library Manager that can be used to customize your libraries. It’s the easiest way to have a quick look through everything and put all your favourites into a new library.
Generally when I work in 3D, I’ll bring my renders as backgrounds into pI for reference, animate the particles as needed, and then hide the background and composite the pI and 3D renders together in After Effects. If you do follow that workflow, make sure to check out Aharon’s pI and AE tutorials on different compositing methods (he also has a DVD that covers the subject deeper). There’s really nothing wrong with rendering the particles on top of your background in pI and just taking that into your editor, it’s really more a matter of whether or not you want to play with your footage more

That’s a really wide and deep topic that depends on a lot of different circumstances, so I’m going to suggest you have a look at the “Layers” portion of Tutorial 4 in the particleIllusion help file, and Blockers, also in Tutorial 4 (near the end).

Where are you exporting the AVIs from and under what codec? I’ve had problems like this when exporting uncompressed AVIs from Vegas and not checking two boxes (Create an OpenDML (AVI version 2.0) compatible file and Render Alpha Channel). Whatever program you are exporting from may have similar settings.

End the process, then in your Start menu program group for pI, run Reset Default Settings, then run pI again. That’s worked for me any time I’ve had any similar hiccup.

February 2, 2007 at 4:11 pm in reply to: Q: How Slow Down Overall Speed (Not Velocity or Life) of Emitters? In many cases, the Over Life graphs are what’s driving the action, so the shorter the particle’s Life, the quicker the animation will be. If you increase the Life to slow them down, you usually have to deal with more particles on screen so you may have to lower the Number graph.

I don’t think it would be a simple effect to mimic simply because Particular is a 3D system and pI isn’t. But not that it can’t be done. If you were to emit a looping video clip from a line emitter, with Size over Life set to scale the particles up over time and with Keep Particles in Order>Oldest in Front selected, you could probably pull off something similar.

Both the scenes you mentioned make use of Area Emitter Masks, which is a feature only available in version 3, not SE. I think the sparkly-beam up emitter is available for SE, but it wouldn’t hug the countours of a person’s body without an Area Emitter Mask (though you might be able to place a few smaller area emitters and get a similar effect). The smoke one also requires another 3 only feature, Get color from Layer
This tutorial explains how to bring in your own logo or text.

If you save to a PNG or TGA sequence, you’ll get the option to save an Alpha channel in the Output Options page.
