Trying to diagnose my own problem… Could it be that FCP trimmed some ‘unused’ portions of a clip and didn’t know that the freeze frames came from those ‘unused’ portions?
That seems to have been the case.
Is this something Media Manager is known for doing? Or is it generally okay at tracking the origins of freeze frames, and my problem is rooted in something else?

Oops, never mind. I think I know what happened… I powered the Z1U off and then on again while it was still connected to the G5. Big mistake…. Did some research on the web this morning and found a post on dvcreators.net about the Z1U and blowing firewire ports on the computer AND the computer, so I think that’s what I did. Apparently with the Z1U you’re supposed to power off both the computer and the camera, connect them, and then turn on the power first to the computer and then to the camera. Of course the manual doesn’t include this information, but it’s in some tech bulletin somewhere.
I have the three-year apple protection plan, and they’re going to send someone to my house to fix the tower, I presume at no cost, so that’s great. Am a little afraid to find out how much it will cost to fix the firewire port on the camera, because it’s not under warrantee anymore — but one out of two isn’t bad.

Hi, Todd. No problem — I just checked the board now, relatively soon after you posted your message. And I checked the board only to find out what my question was (because I’d forgotten what I’d asked)!
But anyway, thanks for your reply. I am comforted, somehow, knowing that FCP does not always behave the way it should. I like it when the fault isn’t mine. 🙂 But now I have one more really (for me) important question: How do I trash my preferences? I’ve heard that recommended as a solution to other problems, but I don’t know how to do that!

Cool, Shane, thanks. But I’m still wondering which components need to be connected via FW 800 connections to get the fastest performance. If my external hard drive is connected to the computer via an FW 800 connection, but the deck is connected to the computer via an FW 400 connection (and I’m capturing from tapes inserted in the deck), do I get any advantage from the FW 800 hard-drive-to-computer connection? Or is the overall speed of the capture operation governed solely by the FW 400 deck-to-computer connection?

Thanks. I just checked, and my “Limit Capture/Export file segment size to” box is unchecked in my preferences, and always has been. (That default of 2000 MB that you’re talking about is there, but greyed out, because the box isn’t checked.) Does this tell us anything interesting?

Thanks for your response, Todd. I did set “Limit Capture Now to” to 60 minutes, but the footage I was capturing was only 30 minutes long. Are you saying that, whatever the limit is, you’ll get those “extra” files, just because “Limit Capture Now to” in the System Settings window is turned on?
Is it better not to limit “Capture Now” operations? Looks like it might be… Thanks! I guess I’ll have to experiment with this. — Rumi Girl
