  • what is an “av” file?

Posted by Elissa Mintz on April 24, 2006 at 6:45 pm

Hi. Can anybody explain to me what an AV (not “AVI”) file is? When I capture raw footage, using either batch capture or capture now, Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 names each of the incoming media clips/files with the name I gave it in the capture window. But when I capture something from tape that’s not raw footage — that’s been edited before by someone else — I get one file with the file name I gave FCP in the capture window, and then a whole bunch of ancillary files named with the “root” file name plus the following designations: -av, -av1, -av2, -av3, etc.

What are these files? I can’t find any information about them in the FCP documentation. I made the big, big, big mistake of trying to rename the folder these files are in (I now know how horrible this is to do), but I’m wondering how much of a factor, if any, these “av” files are in the problems that arise when FCP tries to identify what to use when.

    Thanks!

I believe when you tell FCP to use a file size limit, it will name the subsequent files with the name and add that to the end. Although you cannot view any of these subsequent files, but they all point back to the original file. So you defiantly don’t want to delete them.

Thanks for your response, Todd. I did set “Limit Capture Now to” to 60 minutes, but the footage I was capturing was only 30 minutes long. Are you saying that, whatever the limit is, you’ll get those “extra” files, just because “Limit Capture Now to” in the System Settings window is turned on?

Is it better not to limit “Capture Now” operations? Looks like it might be… Thanks! I guess I’ll have to experiment with this. — Rumi Girl

    Hi Rumi,
Not the capture now limit, but the ‘Limit Capture/Export file segment size to’
I believe the default is 2000mb, so you end up with about 5-6 clips for a half hour worth of footage.

Usually it’s a good thing to leave the ‘Capture Now limit’ on, just in case you forget your digitzing.

Way back in FCP 3, we would run into problems with clips getting out of sync when we didn’t check the ‘Limit Capture/Export file segment size to’, but NOW we don’t usualy check it.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks. I just checked, and my “Limit Capture/Export file segment size to” box is unchecked in my preferences, and always has been. (That default of 2000 MB that you’re talking about is there, but greyed out, because the box isn’t checked.) Does this tell us anything interesting?

    Hi Rumi,
    Sorry for the delay.
I don’t have an answer for that…it shouldn’t have given you those clips?
Every once and a while our FCP would ‘freak out’ and do things like that. Then we usually had to trash the prefs and everything would run great. I wouldn’t worry about it UNLESS it does it again or affects how FCP is running.

Hi, Todd. No problem — I just checked the board now, relatively soon after you posted your message. And I checked the board only to find out what my question was (because I’d forgotten what I’d asked)!

But anyway, thanks for your reply. I am comforted, somehow, knowing that FCP does not always behave the way it should. I like it when the fault isn’t mine. 🙂 But now I have one more really (for me) important question: How do I trash my preferences? I’ve heard that recommended as a solution to other problems, but I don’t know how to do that!

    Gracias,

    Hi Rumi,
Your “Home” directory/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Final Cur Pro 5.0 Perfs
I also trash the ‘cache’ files as well.

PS If you need to post again, make a new post, otherwise we (I) might not see it.

…and if you don’t like fiddling around inside system folders, try FCP Rescue:

Free little app that will do the prefs trashing thing for you – and back them up at the same time.
