Hi. I just used the media manager in FCP 5.1.4 to create a copy of a 12-minute project with a lot of freeze frames in it. (I used the option that lets you delete unused portions of the media files.)

As the copy was under way, I got some error messages that I now, of course, can’t remember the wording of — and in the final project, many of the freeze frames were listed as separate items in the browser with red slashes through them.

I tried reconnecting the freeze frames, and I can make the slashes go away, but when I scrub through the video in the timeline, I get those red “media offline” messages when I reach a place where a freeze frame used to be.

Anyone know what’s up with that, or how to recover from this without too much undue pain?

Trying to diagnose my own problem… Could it be that FCP trimmed some ‘unused’ portions of a clip and didn’t know that the freeze frames came from those ‘unused’ portions?

That seems to have been the case.

Is this something Media Manager is known for doing? Or is it generally okay at tracking the origins of freeze frames, and my problem is rooted in something else?

Media Manager does NOT handle freeze frames very well. It does NOT handle speed ramps very well. These two functions are known for cause innumerable headaches for editors.

If you had asked me BEFORE you media managed this kind of sequence with “many” still frames, I would have said, “Don’t do it”.
