Funny that I am the only one to experience this (maybe since the driver updates?)…but I finally figured it out on my own…after 8 hours of tech support. In Audio/Video Setting I went to the capture presets and actually had to change one of the settings in the “AJA Kona LH: 720p 23.98 10 Bit Varicam” setup. By default the Input on this setting is set to “720p59.94 (1280×720)”, but it needs to be set to “720p59.94 (1280×720) VariCam”. Man this was a terrible day for such a stupid little thing that should have been set in the first place.
Thanks for trying to help,

I know that I should….but it does not work. I have been working on this thing since 10am…been on the phone with AJA, Panasonic, Teck guys from where we rented the deck…and still haven’t figured it out.

Thank you so much. I don’t know why I could never figure that out. This is so helpful.

I guess I don’t hate HD, I hate working with people who don’t know much about HD or take the editor into consideration. They shot some stuff 24 and some 60 (with the intention of the 60 stuff being used for slow mo), but they did not slate or make note of which shots they changed the rate on. And I don’t want to capture everything at 60 and then convert it if I don’t have to, because as I understand when you convert it it makes a new file that does not have accurate TC. So when it comes to onlining it, I will have a real nightmare on my hands I think.

Thanks for your quick responses. Do yo know, do I still have to download the frame rate converter or is it built into FCP now since the release of FCP5?
thanks,

This is all going to be green screen/motion gfx stuff…wouldn’t capturing it SDI be better for this?
Thanks,

If I work “offline” in the DVCProHD codec, and then want to online it capturing through HD-SDI using a Kona LH, will I run into problems capturing 24p footage? From what I understand, when capturing to tape using the varicam, it is always capturing at 60p but adding a pulldown on the fly and flagging the pulldown frames. FCP sees these flags and removes them on ingest. But, are these flags only caried through the firewire stream, or will I be able to conform to 24p easily when I capture with the Kona card?
Thanks in advance,

The Tech Support at AJA was very helpful, I did not mean to imply otherwise. I think that I just exhausted my avenues with them, and am now biting the bullet and upgrading the cards. Got a great deal from Tekserve (we are in NYC…don’t know if they exist elsewhere). It is just tough to get the boss to upgrade a few cards after having just shelled out for the two production suites. We are a motion GFX place, so FCP is really not on the top of our list for things to upgrade and get equipment for, though I am the editor here and am pushing for it. The boss also wants to upgrade our Flame and get rid of the current Flame’s license and turn it into a smoke only station (thus phasing out FCP here). I don’t know why exactly…but hell, if he wants to send me to Smoke school I won’t complain.

I wanted to do it from QT cuz I can just press apple C and copy the frame that I’m paused on and then paste it in a new Photoshop file…plus it is the right dimensions. From FCP I would have to export each individually, or make freeze frames and then batch export them…then bring the into Photoshop and change the dimensions to the correct 1280×720.
