The timeline is not a dockable window like the others. It’s part of the main GUI so you have to move the main screen to move the timeline. The other windows (like the preview window) can be undocked and moved as you’ve seen. As you have discovered, to move the timeline to the second screen, you have to move the main Vegas program to the second screen and then undock and move the individual windows you want on the first screen back.

  • Kent, I don’t know of one that already exists. Doesn’t mean one can’t be created. Send me an e-mail and we can discuss what it might take.

  • In your case, (Platinum doesn’t support nesting – you need the Pro version instead) you might consider simply rendering out each sub-project and then add those renders to a new project.

To find the pixel size, just click on the image and Vegas will tell you in the status bar at the bottom of the explorer screen.

You can get some “flickering” of photos that have fine lines especially on an interlaced format. This is normal. The typical answer is to use “Reduce Interlace Flicker” and/or add a very slight blur to the image. Thin lines are your enemy.

[Adam Rose Esq.] “what about smart render……….?”

You would have to hit the exact same bitrate for that to come into play. If you can do that, then yes it will smart render even SD MPEG2.

[john dougherty] “For the end of year movie I will be taking clips from all of these files. If I then re-render to mpeg 2 will I lose any quality?”

    Short answer is yes.

Longer answer is to go ahead and try it. You’ll probably not be able to visually notice much if any difference. But in the future, keep a copy of the file in the original format (i.e. if you’re shooting DV, keep a DV render of the project).

Vegas DOES use bicubic – if you render using “Best”. Also, if you’re resizing (especially zooming in), ALWAYS use Pan/Crop.

Since your destination is DVD, you need to render to MPEG2. The DVD Architect presets are a good place to start. Vol 4 #1 and Vol 1 #7 are a couple of newsletter issues that deal with going to DVD. There’s another issue that deals with creating slide shows.

Since you’re using photos, it is always good to do a “Match Output Aspect” on the images, only use Pan/Crop for zooming, and render using “BEST” instead of “Good”.

Try a couple of changes in the preferences:

    1. Change the number of rendering threads to 1.
    2. Reduce the ram preview amount (you could try 0 but I’d try a very small number first like 16).
