Go into Audio filters/FCP Filters, that’s where things like Expander/Noise Gate are. Try typing Noise gate
in the help section, it’s all there.

Doh! I knew that (but should have remembered, thanks Bret)!
But, rendering out an AE project as RGB Animation, rather than into the YUV codec it will be used for, is
the best way? It seemed that rendering out directly from AE into the proper codec gains better
results than going from AE in RGB to Animation (in RGB), *then* into YUV in your favorite flavor
in FCP. Still pleading some ignorance here. 🙂

Hey Jerry,
I’m speaking with some ignorance here, so please bear with me. Isn’t the Animation codec RGB, so you’d be taking the YUV video, converting it to
RGB, then back to YUV in FCP? In my Media 100 days I always used the Animation codec because it kept the quality of Uncompressed, but at a much smaller size, but I thought I’ve read that you can run into color issues with the color space changing from YUV to RGB to YUV.
Is it possible to install a more appropriate codec from AJA or Blackmagic onto the PC (like DV50 or Uncompressed 8bit), so the AE files can be input
in FCP without changing color space (assuming that codec is also installed on the Mac)?

You’ll need to export self contained QuickTime movies from AE so they will work with FCP on the laptop. An anamation codec and uncompressed QuickTime should do the job I’d think, but you’ll have to render them in FCP probably.

I’m treading on thin ice here, because my only experience is in wanting to capture audio *after* logging just video,
but *before* capturing*. The way I suggested seems so easy. There may be easier ways, but unless the already
captured video was tweaked during capture and you want to preserve those settings, I would select all the video clips you’ve already captured,
and that you want audio for, and make them off-line (delete them from the drive), recapture, but choose audio *and* video in the clip settings,
and de-select the Use Logged Clip Settings box. It will redigitize the video, and digitize the audio with it. It won’t take any longer than if
you digitize the audio only (it’s going through the same TC).

It’s pretty easy since you haven’t captured yet. In the batch capture window there’s a checkbox “Use Logged Clip Settings”. If you de-select that box, and set the log & capture seting to Audio & video, it will Capture based on your new setting, by-passing the logged setting.

We generally look at the slow DSL speed (384Kb) as the lowest common denominator. Adjusting for
innefficiency in the DSL, we use 300Kb for 320×240 material (with a higher rate for larger material).
We used to care about dial-up people, but now we ignore them. 🙂

You’re right Bob, the manual does say something about that. I think, though, that it goes on to suggest
the LaCie FW800 card if you are going to do it. I have a 17″ PB 1.5G with a LaCie FW card and an IO LA, and
it works great. No problems whatsoever. I use a FW case with an Oxford 912 chip for 2 drives striped RAID 0.
When we moved from M100 to FCP, the decision was based on what desktop NLE we wanted to use, and then
the portable system decision was easy. 🙂
