Yeah, I know David. Didn’t mean to confuse the issue. Nobody responded to his ISO/UDF question for a couple of days, so I tried to help specifically with the ISO/UDF answer. Glad you chimed in

I’m using Toast 6.05, (I think the latest version has a new Video_TS files to DVD-Video setting, or something to that effect).
The recommended way to do it in 6.05 is to use DVD-ROM (UDF), drag the Audio & Video TS folders (but take out the .lay, or any layout files, as well as any data files first, they could interfere with playback on some players), and burn at 1x.

I use DVD SP to build my projects, then drag the Audio & Video_TS folders into Toast and burn it as UDF (DVD-ROM)
for cross-platform compatibility.

I have the 17″ 1.5. It works great; put in the max for RAM (but don’t pay for Apple’s RAM, way too expensive, get Crucial’s), get the big 100G drive, get a second monitor to use when you can (17″ looks pretty small next to a 23-24″ LCD) , do a search in this forum, it’s been discussed dozens of times probably (even this and last month).

Wiebetech.com has a relatively new FW800 3.5″ 7,200RPM drive and enclosure that is buss powered. Walter’s right
that it will use more power than a 2.5″ drive. They come in 120g and 160g versions.

It’s funny to hear about the adaptor being heavy. Coming from a hernia-inducing broadcast camera world,
I think you could add another 10 pounds to the camera and it would still feel light. 🙂
I used one on a project with a 3 week schedule of shooting all day-every day, then a week of the same, then another
week of the same, and I felt that even with the added weight to the front, I still could do very smooth handheld stuff
without fatigue. By the end of the day I lost the “big camera envy” I had at the start. All the big-rig crews (and all much
younger guys!) in the bar each night were exhausted, but not us! The quality is the main reason we went with the adaptor.

The squeeze mode is a more seemless (but lower qulaity?) way of doing 16×9. The Canon uses a digital 16×9 as weel.
The advantage to the Canon id that you can use Canon interchangable lenses and just use the squeeze mode (but you might notice a slight loss in quality) but with the squeeze mode your focus will stay sharp through the whole range of the lens and you will not loose two stops.
You can weigh the advantages for yourself, in doc situations its nice to shoot in squeeze mode because you can not control every lighting situation etc and it’s nice to not have the extra weight of the lens.

The original question didn’t ask about off-line, just the best setup, hence my trashing DV. 🙂
Kevin, I wish I had *your* producers 🙂 For me, staying in 4:2:2 color space with a file that’s still
a fraction of the size of uncompressed, and a little less than twice the size of DV25 is a no-brainer.
Even as an off-line codec it looks almost as good as the original material. That’s a big plus when
a producer doesn’t fully get the concept of what off-line material should look like.

It makes for a good offline codec. 1/5 the space, but gives most of the quality, & it’s compatible with many setups.

And be very careful about that screw! We have rented an adapter from a few places in Boston and they’ve all said that
stripping the screw is one of the most common problems with the adapter.
