it’s size is zero? that’s weird. it crashes as soon as you make a title and try to open the inspector? i’ve noticed other posts of people crashing when they have a weird font or when using foreign language characters. could that be why? if you see that again, could you possibly post the entire log? thanks

  • just to doublecheck, you are on a supported system with the latest software updates? https://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/ if so, what is your system and os? thanks

Yeah that’s crazy. I havent seen that yet, but it doesn’t surprise me. Did you have a long/complex timeline going on or something uber simple? What were you doing at the time (if you can still remember)?

I get it now. My solution was for creating 3 versions of every clip like you mentioned doing earlier, but now I see you only want to make proxies for specific clips that don’t’ play in the timeline. I haven’t found any way to That’s a great idea.

    You could also workaround by:
    1. Create a custom 30p timeline w/ matching frame size
    2. Drop in problematic clips
    3. export flavor of choice

I haven’t found any way to change a single clip to a proxy w/in FCPX. However, you could send that single clip to compressor and make it proxy, then re-import and replace edit. Not as elegant, but it’s a way to do it. You’re idea is good, it would be great to be able to swap out a single clip in the TL that’s not performing well, then be able to swap back for an export.

Hey Tony, I’m confused with your last post. Are you wanting to have 3 different versions of each clip that you can choose between in the timeline? How would that save you space? Wouldn’t that require you to triple your media to have this option? I would think storing your raw media on an external and copying the proxies to your local disc might be the best solution. You can always reconnect or “modify referenced events” (in the inspector tab when project in the project library are selected) to modify which version of the clips you want to view Would this work?

  • also, looks like background tasks are suspended when you skim or playback. so if you work normally, the copying should eventually complete during those bits of idle time when you’re not reviewing your footage. at least you can work while it’s happening instead of being locked out of the program by progress bars

  • Hi Mark,

Where are you storing your media when you work on your main edit station? On an external drive? If so, you can duplicate or move your events and projects from your laptop to that drive. Then when you open the project on your main station you can plug in that drive and work the event & project off the external drive. This should keep all the files on the ext.

Or you can duplicate/move the project from the ext. to your main station and choose “duplicate project only” this should keep the media files on the ext. drive.

I’ve also found a reconnect of sorts….in the project library, select the project that’s missing media (you can’t have the timeline open. Then in the Inspector >properties > Modify Event References. This has the system auto connect any of the clips it finds and you can prioiritize where it looks first….kinda cool.

    Hope this helps!

after you import the media, do you see the metadata in the info inspector? there’s a popup at the bottom of that panel that let’s you choose what kind of metadata you want to see

any chance in the system preferences / energy setting, you have automatic graphic switching on? if so, try turning that off so you’re always using your better graphics card
