Do your compositing in 3Dmax, not PPro. How to accomplish that is best asked in a 3Dmax forum, but in essence you would read each frame of the QuickTime clip and display it on a simple quad or equivalent surface.

MPEG is supported, but because of the compression used it creates problems for editing. See: FAQ: How do I import xyz format files?

Use a utility like GSpot to interrogate the AVI file to determine the actual codecs used in it.

Some AE plug-ins work in CS3, but those that do are already in the PPro effects list. If you don’t see what you want in the list then you’re out of luck. Sorry.

You can run PPro 2.0 and CS3 together without a problem, however, throwing Matrox into the mix might be problematic.

What I would recommend is removing both versions of PPro then installing in the following order:
1. PPro 2.0
2. Matrox, plus all updates
3. PPro CS3

I cannot reproduce this problem in PPro 2.0.
