The timeline is only as “long” as the end of the last clip.
In other words, the timeline does not have an intrinsic length.
If you cannot see the clip then it might be on a track above or below the timeline window. Scroll up and down to see obscured tracks.

As a test, export a small portion of your timeline to an MPEG2 file. Let us know if it succeeds.

DVD is simply too low a capacity medium. Use either blu-ray or external hard-drives for archiving.
