Windows Movie Maker captures to DV AVI Type 1 files, which PPro is not entirely happy with.
Capture directly in PPro to get DV AVI Type 2 files.

Be sure to order the right cable. There are four-pin and six-pin connectors. The four-pin socket is considerably smaller than the six-pin, so they are easy to differentiate.

There is unfortunately no way to work around this behaviour. PPro releases resources when it loses focus to allow other applications to use those resources.
You can make requests directly to Adobe to change this behaviour in a future version of PPro.

That is indeed strange.
Try this: Set the export range to just the last minute of the problem sequence when you export it. Does it succeed or fail?
