    If when you say “we used to” you mean you used to with a Classic or DUI or 2K system, you would be correct. But the Resolve Base Mem does not have that capability.

    You are correct that there is no dissolving between the D and E mems.

    I do not think it is possible to modify the Base Mem, so the Base Mem related functions will always do what they do.

    F5 does not really “recall” a stored grade, it “plays” a still. It should put up a split screen wipe showing you the currently selected still against the current live image.

    There is currently no way to recall stills or mems from the keyboard or the Wave panel. There is also currently no way to save mems from the keyboard or the Wave panel. All you can do is grab a still (F4 on the Wave), and using the mouse, drag the still into a mem. You can recall mem settings (or still settings) by middle clicking on the mem (or still).

    From page 268 of the Resolve operations manual:

    Memory Access

    DaVinci Resolve has a number of hot keys where you can store a grade for quick reference of use, called Mems. In fact, every time you make a grade for a clip, a memory of the grade is kept. (facilitates ’Undo’
    and ’Redo’).

    While you can obviously save a still for each clip, having 1000s of stills to scroll through can
    take time, so there are 26 quick and easy memory locations to store a grade, called A-Z Mems.

    As every clip has its own metadata for the grade, this is stored by DaVinci Resolve as a Memory too.
    There are a number of keys to select or revert to these stored metadata memories, or to clear the
    metadata to revert to a base grade, or no grade, state.

    All Base Mem (Shift Up Base Mem):
    This is used to clear the current color correction of every node
    in the Node Graph for the current clip, but it leave the nodes
    in place.

    Base Mem: Used to clear the grade of the current node.

    Current Base Mem (Shift Down Base Mem):
    Will clear all the grades and all the nodes of the current clip.

    There is an exception to rule to clear the Base Mem. It is possible, in fact very helpful sometimes, to have
    a preset to a clip that is not cleared when you select Base Mem. The simple example is when a film is
    over scanned and the frame edges are shown as well as the image. Instead of making an input resize
    adjustment for every clip to remove the framing, a preset resize can be made and stored, with a label,
    and this preset is not deleted when using Base Mem.

    This is entirely unofficial, and not a supported config item, but this same vendor also sells a GTX-260 card for around $200. It has some sort of firmware update that makes it appear as a GTX-285 to the Mac.

    Being very curious, I obtained one to see what it would do. It has less cores and less VRAM than a 285, so you would expect it to have less performance, and it does. A complex 10 node correction that the 285 breezes through, slows the 260 down to about 21 FPS.

    Still, for the very value conscious user, this could be a solution. For reasonable HD sessions, it would likely be OK.

    The Mac reports it as being a GTX-285 with a VRAM of 896 (GTX-285 shows a VRAM of 1024). The tag on the board says it has 216 cores, whereas the 285 has 240 cores.

    Size and shape is nearly identical to the GTX-285 card. Uses the same 2 power connectors. A pair of power cables comes with the board.

    The scope positioning is fixed with the latest code. That was annoying me too, but it’s been addressed. Or should I say it’s been resolved?

    I’m using 2K DPX clips. And I’m using the Resolve scopes on a second display connected to the DVI connector of the GT-120 card.

    I’ll comment that after reading Walter’s blog, I performed a similar test on our test system here. I removed the GT-120 card, and connected a display to one of the GTX-285 DVI ports. There is a pretty significant performance hit if you use things like Power Curve windows and Blur.

    I built a 10 node correction before removing the GT-120 that had some primary and secondary corrections, a full blur, a circular power window, a Power Curve window and some rotation. This was with 2K DPX files, working in HD resolution. Solid 24 FPS playback. Probably could have added more nodes with no problem.

    After pulling the GT-120, same correction played back at 18FPS. Experimentally found that the blur and the Power Curve windows causing most of the slow down. Getting rid of both of those, the rest of the corrections played back OK at 24FPS.

    The good news about all this is: If you enabled the real time half res Proxy mode, you seem to get all that performance back. The original 10 node correction played back fine at 24FPS with Proxy mode enabled. So if you don’t mind the video output having some loss of resolution (only while grading, this would have no effect on the rendered files) this seems like an OK method of working on a low performance system.

    Still, if you follow the BMD Mac Config guide, you will have plenty of normal performance, and save the Proxy mode solution for those really tricky 20 node corrections. 🙂

    Just to clarify: Impresario is no longer available. What was the Impresario panel set has been redesigned by BMD, and is now called the Resolve Control Surface.

    A new manual for Resolve, including the Resolve Control Surface is being worked on. I don’t know what the current release estimate is for the manual, but maybe Peter can chime in with an estimate.
