  • Leo, I just checked your plugin in an old copy of .3 I have. It works in .3 but it’s not in .4. Sorry.
But to confirm, it was reading original source timecode when dropped onto a clip in the timeline.

I’m in the UK, and I use FCP6 on an older 17 inch MBP.
I bought this lot from OWC:

    Items Ordered: 2
    Qty: 1
    Item Number: OWCEXP34SATA2F1
Description: OWC Slim ExpressCard to eSATA Adapter for Apple MacBook Pro models (See Description for Apple Model Compatibility) and any ExpressCard/34 slot equipped PC Laptop. Add an eSATA Port to your Laptop – Totally Flush Fitting! New with 1 Year OWC Warranty
    Price: $24.99
    Qty: 1
    Item Number: OWCMEPQ936AL2
Description: OWC Mercury Elite Pro “Quad” eSATA / FireWire 800/400 + USB2 Hardware RAID Dual-Drive Enclosure Kit for Two SATA Hard Disk Drives. Oxford 936 chipset. All cables included. Supports up to 2 x 3.0TB Drives! 1 Year Warranty.
    Price: $99.97

And as has been stated already just use USB2 external hard drives for data backup. You’ll only be backing up at night in downtime or whatever, so speed of transfer won’t be an issue. I backup everything onto matched sets of USB drives – mostly 1.5TB Toshiba, and use CD Finder to categorise all the drives. One half of the pair will live of site and I bring them back every so often to copy new files across.

I probably wouldn’t buy the slim Express34 adaptor now if I had to. I’m looking at upgrading to a thunderbolt Mac and needed a hunderbolt to Express34 adaptor. The Sonnet TB-Express34 adaptor isn’t qualified to work with the OWC Express34-eSata adaptor yet, although it might work… So I would probably have to but a Sonnet Express34 to eSata adaptor too. The other solution available is a Lacie TB-eSata hub at £200 or so… Hopefully more TB stuff will come to market soon though.

    Duncan.

IIRC the 5D outputs a non standard image size over HDMI when recording.
If it isn’t standard size some part of the chain eg. FCP won’t ‘see’ it.

    That might be it…

  • I’ve spoken to BlackMagic support and they aren’t sure what I’m doing wrong. They cannot confirm if I need a Tri-Sync generator or not. So I’ll try and hire one.

  • OK I think I need to get a Tri-level sync generator. Does this seem the obvious solution?

Can I connect it to my DeckLink Studio running in 720p and my PAL Digibeta and expect the Digi to lock up correctly to the picture?

    Cheers Folks.

You should look at Handbrake for x264 conversion, way faster than h264 and fully compatible for YouTube.

I know it’s an old thread, but I wanted to suggest you look at using the 64bit version of handbrake for x264 encoding which is a faster h264 encoding system. It’s really really fast, you can get x264 working through Compressor, but Handbrake does a great job.

February 22, 2011 at 9:27 pm in reply to: duplicate named clips

Only when the camera lost power and I had to change batteries. It went back about 5 clips and recorded them with a 02 suffix.

Or are you sure your not seeing spanning on long recordings?

    You’ll see a clip like ABC_1234_01 the ABC_1234_02

February 22, 2011 at 9:23 pm in reply to: SxS cards – best practice re: format vs. erase

I don’t think naming cards before use is vital.

Before you start a job, how do you know how many cards you are going to use?
Do you name every card and then maybe not use it? Are you following an incremental numbering system? Seeing as the clips are going to be given a great numbering system by the camera you might as well just use this.

I always reformat. Have done for years. Of course the camera remembers your previous clip naming setup. If you finished at number ABC_0010_01 the next time you use the camera it will be clip ABC_0011_01.

I use different three letter clip namings for each client, and haven’t got to 9999 clips for any of them yet!

I also keep a proper log of every day of filming, what clips number range I shot, and which card it was recorded on. I shoot to 16 x 16GB SDHC cards, and keep a double backup of the BPAVs on 1TB external HDs. The BPAV are copied into numbered/named folders which relate to the log I make.

In case you need it, when importing into FCP, the folder name containing the BPAV is automatically assigned as the clip’s roll name. But personally if I need to find the original BPAV a clip came from I have my log to refer to.

I also make double backup of the quicktimes after they’ve been used in the edit and we’ve created the graphics, music, VO, DVDs etc on a different set of drives.

The drives are all flightcased and kept apart at different locations, it’s quite a cheap system in all honesty.

    And fairly safe for me.

Strobing is generally caused when you have the shutter set to 1/50th and the country you are in has an electricity supply at 60Hz or vice versa.
