Timecode generator / reader to display source timecode?
Posted by Mark Dobson on April 16, 2012 at 5:11 amHaving searched for information on this forum and others am I right in thinking that it is not possible to burn in timecode for client review that displays the source timecode?
As It’s possible to view the original source timecode with skimmer info turned on surely it’s possible for some clever FCPX boffin to create a plugin that reads and displays the clip source timecode?
I tried to build an effect in Motion but was unsuccessful.
Naturally this is all possible in FCP7 so why not FCPX.

Free TimeCode Reader for FCPX
by Leo Hans on Jul 20, 2011 at 1:19:44 amThere is a free Timecode Reader for Final Cut Pro X.
You can download it from y blog:
https://finalcutargentina.blogspot.com/2011/07/timecode-reader-gratuito-para...
The instructions for the installation are in spanish, but it’s not a difficult matter.
It’s for free, of course.

April 16, 2012 at 12:50 pmThere is a Timecode Generator that will display the timecode of your Timeline.
Go to Generators > Elements > Timecode. Place the playhead at the start of the video. Press “Q” to apply the generator as a connected clip at the start of your timeline. The default length is 10 seconds. Extend the timecode generator to the length of your timeline or clip and it will read the timecode of the selected video. The Timecode Generator is editable in the Inspector. From the Generator tab you can select Format: HMSF, HMS or Frames. Choose the font you like and change its size. Then select the Timecode Base for Current Project or anything from 23. 976 to 60. Add a label to the front of the running timecode display. You also have the option to change the font and background colours. The Video tab gives you control over opacity, size and position.
This generator does not appear to be documented in the User Guide.
Hope this helps.

April 16, 2012 at 5:26 pmIt worked, but seems to be broken in 10.0.4

April 16, 2012 at 5:49 pmThank’s for the response but none of these solutions actually reads and displays the originally timecode from the clips.
They display the project timecode, which is useful for a completed master file but not for providing a client with a copy of the rushes with burnt in time code.
I’m sure there would be a solution somewhere but it has not been developed yet.
So for the first time since last summer I’m going to do some work in FCP7.

April 16, 2012 at 7:49 pmLeo, I just checked your plugin in an old copy of .3 I have. It works in .3 but it’s not in .4. Sorry.
But to confirm, it was reading original source timecode when dropped onto a clip in the timeline.EX1

I last used Leo’s plugin in a very early version and it did read source code…only reads project code in .4 now. -

April 17, 2012 at 2:36 pmDang – why did I upgrade to 10.0.4?
Maybe Leo will fix his app if it no longer works properly.
thanks

April 17, 2012 at 2:55 pmLeo can’t fix it.
Apple must fix it.I sent a bug report shortly after 10.0.4 was released, as my TC Reader didn’t work anymore as well, and there is no chance to fix that.
