I’m guessing your drive is formatted fat32….. you can find out by going to my computer and right clicking on the hard drive and going to properties…. fat32 file systems have a file size limit of 4Gb plus if you are rendering to AVI I think they also cap at 4Gb…. I’d suggest you reformat at least one of your drives to NTFS – it’s a much better file system when working with large volumes and large files….

alternately you could try rendering out an image sequence (such as TARGA), this way there will be not be one single file…

you can also find out more info by searching google or the COW archives for “FAT32” or “4Gb limit”

mmmmmm beer of choice at the moment would have the be a “Coopers Sparkling Ale” …. in fact, i don’t think I’ve ever had a Fosters… maybe I will head down to the local today and get a long neck (that’s a big bottle) of Fosters. Drinking beer can be good research for visual effects you see,

firstly make sure the codec you are using supports alpha channels…. like animation…. also it should be millions of colours+ (the + meaning alpha)

also double check that there is transparency by clicking on the channels button on the composition window (the three overlapping circles) and chose alpha.

you could test if it is rendering with an alpha by importing the render back into AE and putting something underneath it…

AE7 Mac – Yeah mine does the same thing….except, that if my project window is longer than one screen i.e has a scroll bar – AE will jump straight to the top of the list…then I have to scroll down to find the one I just duplicated….then when I rename it it jumps up again so I have to scroll down and find it a second time….

it’s not so bad just once or twice… but often If I’m working on a long project with similar compositions I may be doing many of these duplications….

Pre-Comp the layers you want masked (select them and hit ctrl+shift+c) then apply the mask to the precomp….

lots of effects need to be pre-comped, even if there is only one layer, before you can apply additional effects or transformations….

I read an article online not so long ago about quicktime7 not reading the colour space correctly in h.264 and that is why it looks ok when you get a different application to play it …. I can’t remember where I read it so it may just be rubbish…..

maybe you are refering to “colour banding”? this is espicially obvious with certain colours, like blue.

do a search of the COW archives for “banding” and you will find a number of ways to reduce or eliminate it. Hope this helps….if it’s not banding see if you can do a screenshot and post it up.
