Layers are containers. They can hold any kind of object that exists in Motion, including other layers. To nest, just put layers inside layers.

Yep, the replicator is a new feature in Motion 2.

    Hey Scot,

You guessed it right on the Quicktime bit. The way that FCP, DSP and Shake import Motion projects is through the Motion Quicktime component. It allows Quicktime to call the Motion engine and have the images processed in the background, while Quicktime hands off an image to the app, all as if it were a regular Quicktime movie. With Motion 2, Quicktime does the same for AE. It does seem magical, though, eh?

    Hey Rich,

I didn’t copy any particle emitter. If you download the project and look at the emitter, I just drew a circle shape, made it into particles, set the emitter type to line, then put an attractor behavior on the emitter so that the particles would fall back into the emitter, limiting the cloud’s size. Follow that with the Edge Work filter, dupe it a couple times…and there you have it. It could definitely use some tweaking, but I think it’s in the right direction.

    Hey Rich,

I don’t know what method those clever folks at Mekanism used, but a few particle emitters and some filters can create a similar look. It does get pretty render-intensive, though, so you would probably want to do some pre-rendering. There’s a project called ‘clouds’ that shows it, here: https://homepage.mac.com/specialcase/FileSharing8.html

    Good luck!

With text, I also found that you can fake noise in the rays by filling the text face with a Clouds generator texture. The seething black/white texture breaks up the light rays so that they’re not so geometrically perfect.

The only solution I’ve found to changing the color of the rays effect is to use selective color correction filters.

    Hey Jeffrey,

You can achieve some pretty decent light sweeping effects using the (built-in) Light Rays filter in Motion.

June 7, 2005 at 4:54 pm in reply to: Text tracking and Throw?

    Hey Sean,

What you’re running into is that you have two different behaviors trying to affect the same parameter, so one of them is overriding the other. There is hope, however 🙂 The Text Tracking behavior affects the position of individual characters, and the Throw behavior has its ‘Affect Objects’ option enabled by default, which means that the Throw is trying to affect the individual characters, as well. Just disable the ‘Affect Objects’ checkbox and the Throw will only affect the text object as a whole, resolving the conflict with the individual characters and the Text Tracking behavior.

    Good luck!

June 7, 2005 at 4:56 am in reply to: IFF and Cineon Support in Motion?

    Hey Pete,

Motion doesn’t support Cineon and I’m fairly sure it doesn’t support IFF. Generally, it’s able to read/write anything Quicktime can. Motion 2, however, does support reading and writing of 32-bit OpenEXR files and allows for 16- and 32-bit float projects, so if you’re looking to maintain your colorspace from film, you could use Shake to convert the Cineon or IFF images into OpenEXR, then bring ’em into Motion.

    Hope this answers your question.
