If you’re referring to the shot of the sea turtle, it uses the Relief filter, not the Extrude filter.

Basically, there are two approaches: (1) frame-by-frame roto, or (2) using multiple passes of keyers to build a matte.
Unless your rose was shot against a bluescreen, the most accurate method would be to hand-animate a mask (roto). No complicated tricks: just start keyframing. This method is the most time-intensive, but it’s also the reason why every visual effects studio has at least one roomful of people doing it all day. Still, you might be able to animate a nice mask in the time it takes to read the rest of this post 😉
Your other option is to try a combination of different keying passes, assembling them into a finished matte. The basic workflow is to make a copy of the shot and then process the copy so that it gives you a part of your finished matte. The number of steps/passes varies hugely, depending on the properties of the shot. This workflow best lends itself to a flowgraph-based compositor like Shake, but you can do it in just about any program.
For example, the rose may stand out as a dark object against a white pillow, so you could try pulling a luminance key (filter) to get started. Before applying the key, you might want to apply some contrast to further darken the rose and whiten the pillow, using filters like Contrast or Threshold. If the stem is a clear green, you could do a color key to isolate only the green in the shot, or maybe the red of the rose petals. Keep in mind, though, that there will probably be other elements in the shot that contain those same colors (like the red in human skin). So, you may want to do loose masks around the rose copies (removing other elements like people) before you try to key them. As you can see, this can go on and on. Sometimes this will work in a single step, sometimes it requires many and lots of noodling. But once you have all your parts, comp them together in a layer and use that layer as the source for an Image Mask on your original rose shot.

The plugin was developed in-house at Core Audio Visual (https://coreaudiovisual.com). I have heard that they are very, very close to releasing the plugin, they just need to work out some of the licensing stuff.

I think you may be looking for the Image Mask. It allows any channel from any object (images, text, shapes, particles, etc) to be used as a mask. You’ll find it under Object->Add Image Mask. Motion doesn’t ask for an explicit background, the way Flint/Flame/Inferno/Smoke do.

It looks like they use a combination of particles (the floaty pink sparkles) and the occasional glint from an onscreen object. Most glint-type filters are based on a simple threshold, which doesn’t make it too selective. Motion’s Dazzle filter does the same. I would guess that they mask the glint’s input (or output) to restrict it to certain items of the producers’ choosing.

Yeah, I kinda feel bad for the Motion guys. Big Steve announced Core Image/Video at around the same time as Motion 1.0 was unveiled, so some people thought that that was all Motion was, even though it predated Core Image/Video. Core Animation is more for making it easier for developers to add OpenGL transforms and animation to their UIs than it is for high-quality output, I believe.
Time will tell, though 😉

Image Units are system-wide GPU filters that Apple included with Tiger (OS 10.4). You can read a marketing description here: https://www.apple.com/macosx/features/coreimage/
They are available to any program that supports the CoreImage API. Really, they are there for developers to incorporate into their own programs. I think Apple just needed somewhere to showcase them, so they show up in Motion. There are a few handy ones, though.

Heya,
Because the masks are Image Masks and are based on the alpha of the foreground element, they will always fit. So, if you had some text flying across, or an actor walking, etc, it would just work.
