  • [Ed Smith] “Im trying to convert 4K (H264) MOV files from a Phantom 3 Pro into pro res, and I am unbelievably fed up that compressor is utterly incapable of this task. (see also https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7233633)

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this why there are so many pages of small comapnies offering one-trick converters to do this because Apple is too busy flogging iToys instead of fixing professional apps?”

    Hi Ed.
I suspect some of your camera files are corrupt. A quick look around the DJI forum confirms the cards they ship with the Phantom are sometimes faulty or too slow. If you can, pick up a new class 10 card and test it.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you need to stop the recording *before* turning off the intelligent battery, otherwise the files won’t be written completely.

Not sure if that’s your case, but the error you’re seeing indicates toasted source files.

Those one-trick-ponies are crapware. If QuickTime can open it, Compressor will convert it. Hell, QuickTime 7 Pro will convert it too.

Wow! Haven’t seen that on my system (I keep my phone on the desk next to the HighPoint thunderbolt drive toaster…

I did experience frequent unmount issues with a G-Tech portable several months ago, but it turned out to be a problem with the thunderbolt cable I was using. Replaced the cable and haven’t had an issue since.

Do the settings on the Zoom (bit rate / sample rate) match those of FCPX? Maybe also have a peek in Audio MIDI Setup…

The timecode display issue is a known bug with El Capitan. It shows correct TC, just the labels are wonky.

October 23, 2015 at 7:09 pm in reply to: 4096×2160 together with 1920×1080 in FCPX

[juergen steinbrecher] “Kirk, so that might be a stupid question, but do I have to do that with every clip? Or is there a way to just put the 4k material and set fill and not fit, and then this will be the setting for all other 4k clips in this project?”

Select all of your 4K clips in the browser, and then in the Inspector, change the spatial conform to fill. That will set them all up for edit at once.

[juergen steinbrecher] “I have 4096×2160 material from the GH 4. If I put the material first into the timeline (maybe for fit/fill purposes) then the timeline will use this as the setting (hopefully also with the fit/fill distinction) but will not the 1080 blow up and look horrible? Is there a way to avoid that?”

You can avoid it by first placing one of your 1080 clips in the timeline. You can delete it later if necessary, but only after you’ve also placed one of the 4K clips in the timeline. This assumes that you didn’t set the specs for the project as ‘Custom’ – if you did that, the timeline won’t conform to the first clip that you drop in.

Sounds like you could fix this via Field Dominance Override… select the drone clips in the browser, and go to the inspector’s ‘Info’ pane – toggle to the Settings view – and change the override from Upper First to Progressive. Your timeline (project) settings should also be set to progressive to see the result. Clips that have already been cut into the timeline will also need to have this setting changed.

    Hello Tim!

Question – if you select a clip in the browser, are you able to see your entries in the inspector’s Info pane (with Extended option selected)?

[Bret Williams] “Same blu-ray settings are already in X, aren’t they?”

Well, how about that? Hadn’t seen that in the Destinations pane before… looks like there are a few more configuration options via Compressor if you’re so inclined.

  • [Noam Osband] “I’m thinking of getting this guy cause it can do Thunderbolt 2 speeds. Thoughts? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/985459-REG/highpoint_5212_2_bay_thund...

I have one and use it most every day. Works great.

In our other bay, which has a 2010 MP tower, I use a NewerTech Voyager Q connected to a USB3 card. Also works well.

October 19, 2015 at 9:34 pm in reply to: FCPX to Ableton Live 9

[Daniel Elder] “I am considering using a mixer / composer who uses Ableton Live 9 to mix his music and audio. He says he wants it in .WAV format. I have no idea what to do to send him the master timeline and the audio in a .WAV? Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my XML to him for mastering the audio?”

If he’s looking for WAV files to do the mix, you could export this directly from FCPX.

First thing is to make sure you’ve got Roles properly assigned for all clips in your timeline. Then share / export ‘Master File’ as shown below. You can then do a low-res mp4 of the video that he can use for sync.
