This is the direction I’m going as well.

Currently running an M1 Mini as my main edit station (it’s been a really great upgrade over the 2013 trashcan), but I recently got a 16″ MBP Max and am planning to move everything over to that. The syncing is getting annoying, and the laptop has far more grunt than the Mini.

I’d be interested to see what codecs are available for transcode. That version of Final Cut was released in 2004, and I’d forgotten that ProRes was introduced in 2007 (!!)

You could try Uncompressed (massive files, but lossless) as a mezzanine on your way to ProRes on the new machine.

With FCP 4.5 XML exports (or any version through FC 7), you’ll need to run it through a translator first. I think Premiere will read them natively, but I use an app called SendToX. The old .fcp project files themselves cannot be opened by any version of FCPX, nothing to do with platform/processor.

I’d transcode them all to ProRes on the old / original machine. If you’ve got FCP 4.5, I’d guess you also have the version of Compressor that came with it, yes?

“when you mpeg a file” is a bit ambiguous. There are several flavors of mpeg compression, and they’re all lossy, so no, not the same quality as the originals. Transcode the originals to ProRes on the old machine, and export your old FCP projects as XML while you’re in there.

There is no way to change the I/O points of a compound clip from inside the clip. Those lines represent the I/O points as it relates to your current timeline. In a different timeline, it would reflect different points – it’s only a reference.

You may need to break apart the comp and make a new one if it’s already in use. When you change anything about a Compound Clip, that change occurs in every child instance.

That isn’t currently a feature (please send feedback to the FCP team to add it). A few years ago, another user wrote a couple of AppleScripts to facilitate changing these sets. I haven’t tried these, but here’s the thread:

EDIT: I’ve compiled the scripts and can verify that they work perfectly on Monterey / FCPX 10.6.3

I can’t test this right now, but I’m fairly certain that an XML export from FCP 7 can be imported directly into Premiere.

Looks like that was it! Attached are your original .fcp file, the XML output (with batch list), a few screenshots showing what was in there, and a new FCPX Library with the whole thing imported.

Just need to relink the footage and you should be good!

Hm. This is an event file, from the early days of FCPX. I don’t have 10.1, so can’t do anything with it unfortunately.

Maybe this was an early conversion from 7 to X, and you have a .fcp project file from FC 7?
