Parenting modes are covered pretty well in the Absolute Training Series from VASST. There are currently 9 DVDs in the series.
Edward Troxel has very good compositing information in his newsletters.

if you call Sony tech support and tell them you’re having trouble with Canon AVCHD footage, they can’t provide you with information, because they haven’t tested/SQA’d Canon footage. That doesn’t mean Vegas doesn’t read it, just that they don’t officially support it.

No, it is not. The video card will provide its own chroma smoothing/post processing that is great for some applications, but not for monitoring video when accurate color and contrast are the goal.
Choices for quality output are:
DV/Firewire
Secondary Monitor/DVI
SD/SDI (proprietary card)
HD/SDI (Proprietary card)and in all of the above, a properly calibrated monitor is required.

This was done using greenscreen in Movie Studio, with a Television sync plugin plus one or two others, I’ve forgotten, added just before the fade out. It’s actually incredibly simple.

1. Does Vegas 8 then automatically down convert to SD when I bring in video from this camera?
No. Vegas imports this media as HD, as it should.2. Authoring a SD DVD, is an original HD down-converted have any better picture than capturing from my VX2000?
Yes, a significantly better image will come from this cam compared to your VX, in most situations.3. I think I understand that these files are of an MPEG-2 type? I’m reading about M2t or something like that. So I’m looking at limited editing then. Is the size of 720 x 480 still apply or are we looking at a different video size? Or am I not asking the right question?
These files are 1440 x 1080, same as HDV, in an MTS stream (mpeg).$. DSE, What’s your latest book on HD (AVCHD)? 😉

This is exactly why Ultimate S, Excalibur, and infinitiCAM are still preferable for multicam use by many people.

It is that easy, but if you’re starting with 30p, expect less than stellar results going from 30p to 24p. 50/60i, 25p go to 24p very nicely. 30p doesn’t do so well.
