It may well be that it’s mjpeg, not mpeg, and requires a third-party codec (unless you’re using Vegas 8, which has its own mjpeg decoder in it).
Obviously I didn’t download the file. Have you looked at the file properties in Gspot? -

Effectively, color resolutions are half that of the luma. The reason color/light are sampled this way is that the bandwidth(size) of the signal is cut by nearly 1/3 with no perceptual difference.
BETA SP is a downconvert from HDV, and DV is a downconvert from BETA SP.
BETA SP is 4:2:2 and DV is 4:1:1. -
Could it be that I’m doing two different things within a keyframe — a rotate, and a zoom at once?
Not likely. If you can control the attribute, the keyframe can recall it.
Maybe you have a track muted/solo’d?
Maybe you have FX turned off in the preview window? -
I get down to Eloy once it gets cool. There is a place I like to stay just off the DZ, Tumbleweed Road.
If your son is at Eloy, he can learn from Michael McGowan, one of the top camera operators in the sport. Mike has shot more camera training stuff in the air than I have on the ground. He’s seriously gifted, and is a willing teacher, although a bit gruff.
Also have your son look up Mark Kirschenbaum, also known as “Trunk.” He manufactures aerial tools in addition to being a great camera operator/flyer.

Several answers here….
1-The Canon camera *CANNOT* be used for skydiving. The image stabilizer is not capable of complete lock. The Sony HC 3/5/7 are very popular, as is the Sony CX7 (no LANC). Sony pretty well rules the skydiving world. The A1 was used for capturing the World Cup last year, and we’ll be using A1’s again for the World Cup this year.
Here is an article I wrote about skydiving with the A1U camcorders. There is footage in that article.2. The weight of the camera for the skydiver varies by the skydiver’s ability. I can jump with a RED or Z1. I assure you, your son cannot. A hard opening can (and many times has) break a skydivers neck. Jumping with a camera is more than just the helmet. Any idiot can buy a helmet and fly with it. To do so safely requires knowledge of canopies, how they open, the right clothing/jumpsuit, ringsights owning audibles, etc. Skydiving camera flyers are amongst the highest risk camera ops in the world. There is much more involved than simply strapping on a camera and helmet…many of the deaths in the sport are related to camera ops. Training is paramount.
3. If you’re his father, look out for his safety. At 150 jumps, he has no business putting a camera on his head. USPA recommends a *minimum* of 200 jumps, and some DZ’s don’t allow it til 300. Tandem manufacturers ratings specify that no one may be in the air with a tandem and camera until a minimum of 500 jumps.
After saying that…if he’s ready to toss on a camera for solo jumps in another 75 jumps or so…I’m very happy to help.I’d highly recommend your son view the DVD “Aerial Camera: What You NEED to Know” featuring Norman Kent, one of the greatest aerial cinematographers in the world. **Disclaimer, I shot/produced this four-hour plus DVD and do personally benefit from the purchase of the DVD.**

Do you understand gamma? WMP has a different gamma.
Additionally, you can burn a DVD that has a 0-255 range or a DVD that has a 16-235 range. What you are describing is the difference between these ranges.
There is nothing wrong with the MainConcept encoder in Vegas, but rather what/how you’re feeding it or with what application you’re viewing the media. -

A converter like the ADVC series is DV. End of story. It’s a DV codec. And it’s about as good as it gets. Sony has a slightly better codec, but it’s a discussion of mosquito hair. It’s meaningless at that point.
DV is as good as this gets. Coming from a VHS source or similar, the quality of the DV codec is even less meaningful, as you’re upconverting the analog VHS to DV.
There are no “numbers” when it comes to DV codecs. There are curves, in terms of how blacks/whites are managed, but for the most part, it’s a low-grade codec that doesn’t stand for a lot of manipulation.
If you want to go to a converter such as the Convergent Design SD Connect, you could purchase an SD/SDI card for your computer, serious amounts of drive space, and use a lightly compressed file format in a 4:2:2 sample. Depending on the source, you might consider this route if cost is no object. -
Your question cannot be specifically answered, because it does not take codecs into account.
Various codecs offer various levels of compression ranging from 2:1 to 40:1, with full or partial color sampling. It also doesn’t take into account whether the compression format is spatial, temporal, or both.
AVI isn’t a compression format, it’s a wrapper that contains a compression format. DivX on the other hand, is a compression format/codec that can live within an avi wrapper.
think of a wrapper as a paper sack that can contain many different products/items. An avi wrapper can contain DV, uncompressed, mpeg, etc.
Perhaps if you explained what you’re looking to better understand at a specific point, you’d get a better answer.Douglas Spotted Eagle
