    G’day,

    Thanks for the information.

What are your thoughts on the 7D versus the 60D for this situation? The 7D appears to be a much better still camera (which my wife prefers). Do you think the 60D is a better video camera?

Thanks again for all your guidance.

    Regards,
    Doug

I should add that I’ve purchased the book From Stills To Motion, which will hopefully be delivered in 2-3 weeks. Hopefully any advice received and wisdom from the book will help to create a convincing business case to the wife…

  • G’day Jeff,

Excellent. This is exactly the information I was hoping someone would know. Thanks so much for letting me know so quickly.

    Regards,
    Doug

  • G’day,

Yes, I’m thinking about buying this camera as well. I wouldn’t buy it, though, if I can’t edit the footage using FCP 7.

    G’day,

I’d consider doing any or all of the following.

    1. Increase the RAM to the maximum amount available

    2. Use a 7200-rpm or faster external hard disk as the capture location. It’s better to have separate disks for the operation system and the storage for the capture

    3. Shut down as many other applications as you can

    4. When you’re capturing, don’t use other applications

Please let us know how you’re going.

    Regards,
    Doug

May 17, 2006 at 4:12 am in reply to: converting a wedding from NTSC into PAL.

    G’day Leigh,

Not only does the PAL DVD need to play the NTSC standard video, but the television needs to as well. Newer models do, but it can be an issue with televisions which are more than a couple of years old (at least here in Australia).

Graeme Nattress’ conversion utility does an excellent job of converting between NTSC and PAL.

May 9, 2006 at 9:01 pm in reply to: FCP 5.0.1 Won’t Open!!!

    G’day,

This exact problem happened to me two days ago. I’ll tell you the steps which I followed.

    1. Trash preferences – this often works apparently
    2. Delete application and re-install – this worked in my case

If you delete and reinstall, there is a receipt folder in ~/library/receipts. Delete all receipts with Final Cut Pro in the name. If you don’t do this, Final Cut Pro won’t reinstall completely and the solution won’t work (at least in my case).

The good news is that once I reinstalled, the problem hasn’t reoccured (in the last day). All my hair is grey though…..

    Doug

    G’day Chris,

Yes, I saw that the HC3 just came out. My wife would go completely berserk if I suggested buying another camera so soon after buying the HC1, so I haven’t tempted fate by looking at it.

We use macs as well and the HC1 is plug and play. Once we set up 6080i as a preset, it captures wonderfully and we haven’t had any issues. Automatic scene detection using HD capture is a real bonus as well.

May 8, 2006 at 9:02 pm in reply to: is project size related to FCP 5.1 crash?

    G’day Todd,

Thanks for your excellent advice. About 12 hours later, the world is bright again.

Now that my breathing has returned to normal, is this the following process to use?

    1. Trash the preferences

    (and if that doesn’t work)

    2. Reinstall the program

Are there recommended on-line user groups for Final Cut Pro (in addition to the Creative Calf community)? I’m not aware of one here in Melbourne Australia, so I wonder if it’s possible to exchange information with people on-line. Apple technical support said support is $200/incident, so I’m wondering about any options prior to calling them.

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards,
    Doug

    G’day Chris,

We have the HDV-HC1 and like it a lot. The video quality is great (for prosumer use) and offers many advantages over the low-end cameras which we bought previously. I’m really pleased with it. Is there anything in particular which you’d like to know about it?

    Regards,
    Doug
