Any recommendations on entry level HD cameras, such as the Sony HDR-HC3/HC1? Our school’s budget for our next camera has to remain below $1800, or so. Has anyione had experience with the Sony HDR-HC3?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

    G’day Chris,

We have the HDV-HC1 and like it a lot. The video quality is great (for prosumer use) and offers many advantages over the low-end cameras which we bought previously. I’m really pleased with it. Is there anything in particular which you’d like to know about it?

    Regards,
    Doug

Thanks for the input Doug. I noticed that some stores are selling the HC3 – is that the follow-on model to the HC1? What do you like about it, or perhaps what do you not like about it (limitations)? We use Macs (iMovie & FCP) exclusively – any problems on you’ve had (assuming you use Macs)?

    Thanks again,

    Chris

    G’day Chris,

Yes, I saw that the HC3 just came out. My wife would go completely berserk if I suggested buying another camera so soon after buying the HC1, so I haven’t tempted fate by looking at it.

We use macs as well and the HC1 is plug and play. Once we set up 6080i as a preset, it captures wonderfully and we haven’t had any issues. Automatic scene detection using HD capture is a real bonus as well.

    Regards,
    Doug
