I like the single viewer approach much more than the dual views for non multicam editing. Back 20+ years ago when I was editing in linear suites, we only really looked at one monitor. The I square (CMX terminology) would switch between record machine and switcher, and the switcher would switch between sources, (on the ME that was controlled by the editor). Though we had other source monitors in the room (small B&Ws for the VTR’s) we really didn’t need them, because the majority of our focus was on the main edit monitor. I think that FCPX emulates that approach, and I prefer it. I do understand however that for ganging purposes you need the 2nd viewer, but I find the 1 viewer approach much more efficient.
In fact, if somebody can tell me how to make PP emulate that feature, I would be much more likely to spend more time on Premiere!

When using Premiere, I really want to be in a 2 screen layout. In FCPX, (where I spend 90% of my time) I feel most comfortable on my 27″ iMac in a single screen environment. In fact when I edit at home (2008 Mac Pro with (2) 20″ Apple monitors), I think that FCPX is awkward, on 2 screens.

When I transitioned from a linear environment to Avid in the late 90’s I felt that 2 monitors are a minimum. This preference lasted through FCP 7. Now my computer at work is a 27″ iMac, my editor at home is a 2008 MacPro with 2 20″ monitors. I much prefer the (1) 27″ to the (2) 20s. I think I even enjoy editing on my daughter’s 13″ MBP, more than I do with the MacPro. I think X was designed as a single monitor program. That said, when I dabble with Premiere, I feel that 2 monitors are a must…..

I visit this forum almost every day, (yet seldom post), and I’ve always had you pegged as being firmly in the FCPX camp; has that changed? If so, why? I ask because I am always tempted to move to Premiere, but stay with X because I find it a more enjoyable edit experience, and I find Motion far more intuitive than AE.

I did a test shoot using 1080p 30 and 1080i 60 clips and they both imported, transcoded and played back correctly. However the 30p did flash black very briefly before playing back correctly,

I just did a test import from footage shot on a Panasonic AG-AC160. Video was shot at 720p 59.94. The video imported correctly, and transcoded to ProRes correctly.
I also did a 3 camera multicam edit using 3 streams of RAW AVCHD (no ProRes transcode) yesterday, immediately after upgrading to 10.2. The video was imported into FCPX before the upgrade.

I work on a digital island. The only collaboration is between the audio guy and myself, and he usually sends wave files to me.
Thank you everybody for your responses. There will be of course, be other drives attached to this rMBP. I can’t hold all my graphics on this computer for example. But for taking a self contained project home to work on, it seems like a great work flow.

As somebody who has gone through the 1″ machine to machine, – CMX – Harry – Axial – Video Cube – Media 100 – Avid – FCP 7 to FCPX course in my career, I find that at 53, I still love to edit! I did my first ever complete edit on an iPad yesterday! Editing a family movie to post on Facebook. I had a blast! I remember in 1991 going to NAB and being terrified of the Toaster. It was a threat to the $750,00 D2 suite my employer paid me to edit in. But as time has gone on I have come to the realization it’s not so much the tools that make it fun, as it is the process.

One thing that hasn’t been discussed yet, is that BMD is notorious for delivering half finished products, at least on the hardware side of things. They seen to be a little more attentive with Resolve. However, I think it would be unwise to jump in with both feet, with a product from a company that loves to promise big things, and then is real slow delivering on those promises.
