Michael, I defiantly plan to look at that workflow once I get to know Resolve well enough. My work involves a lot of Multicam, which FCPX is great at. I am hoping to find that Resolve is just as good. Thanks for your response.

Of all the various virtual presentations done on the web, the presentations by Grant Petty from Blackmagic, are the ones that I look forward to most. I’ll watch them all the way through no matter how long they are. (Though I think BMD needs to embrace IP video, sometime REAL soon.)

[Bob Zelin] “As for WD RED drives, MAKE SURE they are the WD RED Pro, as the Pro are 7200 RPM and the regular RED are 5400 RPM, which will make your TVS-873e only be able to do 450 MB/sec.”
I don’t understand the math here. Assuming Raid 5, if you have 7 drives available for data @175MB/sec that turns out to be a theoretical 1225MB/s. Raid 6 would be 1050. Are you formatting the NAS Raid 50?

[Herb Sevush] “no desire to work in an on-line CMX room again,”
I don’t know about that. CMX Omni, with 2 D-2 machines, 3 Sony 1″, and 1 Beta SP. Ampex Century 330, 2 channels of Kaliedescope, and don’t forget the Abekas A-62, and A-42, all in one suite…… I could go back for one day. I think it would be fun……

Simon,
I am a huge fan of yours! I love watching your Motion and Fusion tutorials, right up to part where I realize I’m never going to be able to recreate what your doing on the screen. But I swear that you have, in the last 6 months, become increasingly bitter towards Apple, and become very vocal about it. Have you been hanging out at the pub, with Aindreas Gallagher? Should we start a “Go Fund Me” to buy you a iMac Pro, so you can rekindle a deep love for all things Cupertino? Let us help you in your pain……don walker

After years of waiting to replace my 2008 8-core MacPro, it looks like December will be new computer month for me. I do a lot of FCPX and Motion work, (some with 4K footage), very little After Effects, and I have not yet gone down the Resolve path. It seems to me, that even though I’m tempted to go for the entry level iMac Pro (perhaps with a bigger SSD), my best bet would be to buy a top of the line iMac, with 3rd party RAM, and then have enough money left over to buy a modest laptop for those on the road jobs. Can anyone argue that I would be better off with the iMac Pro?

I don’ remember there being much of debate among editors. Of course there really wasn’t very much opportunities to debate, like there is today. In the Atlanta market, which is where I was in the late 80’s, early 90’s, it seemed to be vastly CMX and GVG, with the big exceptions being Crawford Communications, which was a big Ampex ACE house, and VTA (Video Tape Associates) with own home made editing system. Peachtree Post, one of the other big facilities, had at one time, bays with CMX, Sony and Axial, with Sony, GVG and Abekas switchers. A good freelancer knew how to run them all.
