[Oliver Peters] “Honestly, at this point, many of us will be surprised if any big, new features arrive in X.”

    Oliver,
The feature requests that you asked for in the first rendition of this thread, were they BIG features in your mind, or do anticipate seeing at least some of them?
Do you feel that active development of X is winding down?

June 15, 2017 at 7:29 pm in reply to: New iMac for 4k editing

[Robin S. Kurz] “[Peter DeArmond] “but I would choose the core i7 over the core i5 processor.”

Why? While working with FCP X, Motion et al, the CPU is by far the least relevant when it comes to working performance. You want to max out the GPU first and foremost, then get a decent amount of RAM, then fast external storage.”

Ok, so now Robin says that the choice of an i7 is not that critical over the i5. Peter says the i7 is crucial. Which is it?
Is an FCPX editor really going to see much difference between the two, all other options being equal?

I would love to read some other opinions.

December 18, 2016 at 9:39 pm in reply to: At least one NLE is making great use of the new Touch Bar

[Steve Connor] “I think the touch bar is a nice addition, but I don’t think it’s going to revolutionise editing”

What I do think is revolutionary (albeit, at a very high price point) is having a 2TB high speed SSD inside the computer.
Very few of my libraries are over 1 TB in size, and I can see having a modest capability RAID at home, and another at work, but keeping the library I’m working with, on the internal drive of the laptop, and doing my editing all from within the machine. Meaning that anywhere that laptop is, my project is, and it doesn’t have to be just proxies.

The touch bar would not make me want to buy that laptop. The 2TB SSD does.

August 15, 2016 at 1:26 pm in reply to: Yet another update for Resolve

[Dean Neal] “A client wont care that its just ‘Blackmagic glitches’ that cause their content to suddenly disappear off a Video Monitor… they will just think we are using unstable software. “

In the church I work at, we have a truckload of BMD hardware, including a 2 M/E switcher. It was inexpensive to purchase, so that made it enticing for us and so many others.

In the long run, it’s just cheap junk.

A look at the BMD website, would make you think that their products are the cat’s meow. After all that’s what good marketing does. But in reality they seem to be a company with an unsustainable business model, with engineering resources stretched amazingly thin.
I think in the long run, it would benefit Blackmagic to raise their prices, double their staff, and truly become the company they really want (and can) be.

Until they do that, I am going to try do de-BMD my building as fast as my budget will let me.
    Just my opinion.

July 18, 2016 at 7:21 pm in reply to: Where’s your footage coming from?

My A camera is a Panasonic DVX-200 (great camera even with a fixed lens). My b camera is either my iPhone 6s plus, or a Panasonic GH-2. We also record our services with 4 Panasonic 160’s and a 150, all switched through a Blackmagic 2 ME switcher. I will be adding a used Canon 7D to the mix, as soon as it comes back from repair.

90% of what I edit, is video that myself or a volunteer has shot.

I can’t say enough enough about the Pani 200. It has a big sensor look, in a form factor that’s easy to for volunteers to deal with!

  • [Noah Kadner] “ep solid FCPX machine there”

    Noah,
Does the fact the computer has a quad core i5 vs a quad core i7 bother you at all? When dealing with FCPX and Motion, is there a large amount of difference between the two?

April 9, 2016 at 5:13 pm in reply to: Eyelines in talking head interviews

I hate to admit this. I did not find the ad distracting. Is there any off axis interview styles that you find appropriate? Can you show me an example? I’ve been editing for 30 years. (not a newbie) but I’ve also never been institutionally trained to edit. (i was trained as a broadcast engineer, but found directing and editing far more fulfilling).

March 3, 2016 at 10:38 pm in reply to: OT: And then there is this…

[Oliver Peters] “That’s where I believe a BMD acquisition of the IP for MC has a lot of possibilities. Granted, it’s pure sprculation, but it certainly has breathed life and growth into various other moribund brands.”

But with all the price cutting and innovation BMD has done with Resolve, they still (after 3 or 4 years) haven’t made a functional editor out of it, no matter what their marketing department says.

Their hardware products are very appealing from a price stand point, but regularly ship with advertised features missing, sometimes never to be seen over the life of the product.

I have in my office 6 to 8 various converters and DA’s with outputs or inputs that just died. I have an ATEM switcher with a couple of inputs and 1 Aux output that are also dead. (to be fair, this MAY have been due to a lightning strike, but there are others that complain about the same thing) Their computer IO software drivers are seriously messed up at this time also.

Is this really the company that you want buying a legendary NLE to save it and improve it?

[Don Walker] “New drivers are out today! I’ve been having some video freezing issues, hope to see an improvement.”

Don’t bother, worse than before. I may buy a AJA T-tap or IO before the day is over!
