New drivers are out today! I’ve been having some video freezing issues, hope to see an improvement.

  • Simon,
You bring to mind a long standing fear of mine.
Though I’ve been editing for 29 years (Linear and NLE) I sometimes wish I could have one of the more prolific FCPX editors on this forum watch me for a couple of days and show me that one little thing, that I’m missing that would bring a huge productivity boost to my workflow. I fear that I doing something wrong, or that I’m don’t know one little feature that would change my world.
That’s why I love the Cow…… and the Ripple Training guys with their free training.

[Bret Williams] ” I don’t often need send to motion. I use clips in Motion projects but don’t usually have a need to send a sequence.”

Are you saying Bret, that you wouldn’t find the ability to edit and faux composite a group of clips together in a project, get the timing just how you want it, and then send that nest (for a lack of a better word) to Motion for the hard core effect work, useful?

[John Rofrano] “Perhaps it’s just time for the old dogs to learn some new tricks and stay ahead of the kiddies. ;-)”

It would be really interesting to know what the “New Tricks” that will be the norm in 10 years are.

I wrote the original post somewhat tongue and cheek, but the whole Best Buy episode did give me a wake up call. Time to evaluate what your giving your clients to make sure that a Cowboy Preacher with an iPhone can’t give the same quality of product that your putting out with your Mac Pro and $5000 camera.

I did leave Best Buy yesterday, and go home a complete an all day Motion / FCPX edit of a show open for a cooking show pilot I shot and posted. The preacher and the 8 yr. old probably couldn’t do that.

[Craig Seeman] “Granted it’s not quite the same thing but there’s no easy way for someone to find near equivalent functions for many functions in FCPX.

I knew that the function was there, it’s just I don’t find the function nearly as useful as in other applications.

[Craig Seeman] “Imagine an editor coming from any other NLE trying to search for “Match Frame.” It just isn’t there and they have absolutely no easy way to know what the equivalent feature is in FCPX.”

One reason that the term “Match Frame” isn’t there (IMHO), is that the Match Frame function as I remember from my linear/AVID/FCP7 days doesn’t really exist in FCPX.

December 14, 2015 at 3:50 am in reply to: Off the shelf TV for a system monitor.

    Oliver,
I was thinking of using a 4K Tv as a system display, not to show video with. I figured I would come close to the screen real estate and resolution of a 5K iMac, but keep the portability of a MBP. I have a couple of friends that have the Retina MBPs, I might just borrow one, go down to the store, hook it up and see what it looks like.

[John Rofrano] “Have you seen the iMac Retina 5K up close and personal? You owe it to yourself to go down to the local (or not so local depending on where you live) Apple Store and feast your eyes on the iMac 5K display.”

John, I have seen the 5K, and I love it for the screen, better graphics card, and the 32 GB of Ram. I am just weighing my monitoring options if I were to decide to go with the MBP for the portability. It is a very difficult choice.

[James Ewart] “First comment about El Capitan is exporting seems much slower out of FCPX to me. I have not done a scientific test. I measure it on the personal boredom tedium scale.

I’ve noticed this also. On Sunday afternoons, I am exporting a 1:58;00 mp4. What used to take 35 minutes, now takes over an hour!

October 21, 2015 at 5:14 pm in reply to: LED Strobing – that was never there before.

I imported some raw camera footage into a different computer, running Yosemite, into Premiere, just to eliminate OS and editing program. 59.94, looks great, 29.97 looks horrible. The lights are cheap, and are certainly not rated for very much of anything. The biggest question is, we’ve had this backdrop for 3 months, why are we just now seeing it.
