  • [Herb Sevush] “Because it was the best thing since sliced bread. I was never an on-line editor, but I loved working with some really good ones, and watching them figure out how to build complicated effects with a single channel of ADO and pre-read was a downright thrill.”

But in one careless moment it could all be gone……. Unless of course you backed up your layers! Sound familiar?

  • [Herb Sevush] “or the Montage, of the Edit Droid, or D2 or ..”

    Herb,

I never used the Montage or Edit Droid, but D2 was the king of post and playback, until DigiBeta took it’s place. I think it was a very successful format, which just became obsolete.

  • [Michael Aranyshev] “I’m in Russia so I don’t watch TV at all.”

Really? Surely there is something to watch on Russian TV?

  • [Walter Soyka] “On this question, though, I’d also ask how many people who are using and loving FCPX now are comparing it only to FCP7. In other words, how many tried MC5.5, PrP CS5.5, and FCPX before choosing FCPX versus defaulting to FCPX?

I had been an Avid user in the late 90’s and early 00’s. I knew it pretty well. I even had my FCP 7 keyboard laid out more like a MC keyboard than Apple. So when FCP X, PP 5.5 and MC 6 came out at the same time I tried each. I got frustrated with Adobe and Avid because I wanted them to act exactly like FCP7, and of course they didn’t. I think because I knew FCP X was different, I had no such expectations, I found X to be very “fun” to edit with, and fast. Now i find it to be useful at times but at other times a big pain in the backside. I am looking forward to seeing what PP 6 looks like and I will defiantly try it, however I still have high hopes that FCPX will turn out to be a killer editing app.

  • [Christian Schumacher] “”In 2011, the average worldwide daily viewing time reached three hours and 16 minutes per person per day, an increase of six minutes compared to 2011, but of 20 minutes over ten years.””

This brings about a question, that I have wanted to ask for a long time. Of the people who frequent this forum, how much TV do you watch? I’m lucky if I watch 3 hours a week, much less, 3+ hours a day. Yet I love producing, shooting, editing etc. I’ve always wondered if there is something wrong with me.

Most of my work i do is for churches and non profits, though there was a time 20 years ago where you could watch any of the network affiliates in Atlanta, and every commercial break would have a spot that I edited, and sometimes the whole break would be my spots….. Or so it seemed. Back then I would watch 2 or so hours a night, if I wasn’t editing.

  • [Chris Harlan] “Actually, its an interesting place to be. I like many of the folk–yourself included–and find it a valuable nexus for many things NLE. Probably, because it was such an eventful, passionate shift that we all went through, and because of the “or not” which means you can talk about more than just FCP X, I find the forum a bit like an editor’s lounge and like to drop in to see what’s what. I still am interested in what FCP X might have to offer, and I’ve really loved some of the discussions because they’ve made me think differently about what I do. I may not harken to the idea of “Roles” but it has made me really think about tracks and routing in ways that I never might have. I like debating where Apple is going, and trying to figure out what future workstations might look like. Editing can be quite solitary, as you are undoubtedly aware, and its nice to pop into the Future of Editing Lounge to buy a diet Pepsi from the machine and talk to other editors for bit until break time is over. Isn’t that why you’re here?”

    Ditto……

I wasn’t trying to Motion on the same level as AE. Nobody who has used both would. But for an Apple originated program, it is incredibly useful, especially in FCS 3. I have not used 5 enough to make a judgement. Other programs that I think work well are the iwork suite, and Garage Band.

[Michael Belanger] “APPLE is a marketing company who have no ability to write code.”

I am in the middle of a tight deadline but couldn’t resist. Apple’s Motion is an AWESOME program. IMHO

[David Roth Weiss] “Absolutely! And, I can tell you that happens at the dealer level too. There’s nothing a dealer rep. at Apple will tell you that we here don’t already know.”

However in the trenches….. I talked to a retail employee (who I did not know) sometime after the FCPX launch, when the person found out I was in production….. they proceeded to give me a scathing review of FCPX.

    Jim,

I am so sorry…… You were one of the most positive advocates for X just a few short months ago. I was very encouraged reading your posts about the program.

The bottom line is this….. and I will use a dreaded analogy. I want X to succeed. I like it; I want my daughter to learn to drive, and I am teaching her. She’s not ready for Interstate 30, and X is not ready to be trusted to the big projects. I am looking forward to both the daughter driving and the software to fly.

(I am also waiting with baited breath to see what Premiere 6 looks like!)
