August 26, 2009 at 3:11 am in reply to: Getting rid of a horrible blue halo around my subjects in parrot filmG’day Michael:
Yes I did indeed use an UV filter on the cam but somehow since the lighting was poor and my inadvertant use of the cams backlighting feature I ended up with the blue shadow.
The video tutorial that Richard Harrington was fantastic and I am hopeful I can somehow ressurect this footage. I also appreciated the suggested tips you offered as well. Many thanks!
By the way I loved Tazzie and obtained footage of some really rare species there. Orange-bellied parrot in the Maleleuca region for starters.
Thanks for your polite and helpful reply!
Cheers!

I guess I have committed the unpardonable sin. I have used final cut pro AND sony vegas to work with projects in the past. As a person who is rather new to editing and doing what I can to work with some less-than fantastic footage I had hoped I would be able to simply find a tool to help me and wanted to explore Final Cut’s tools and options. I am willing to use either program for assistance. I hadnt expected an adolescent unhelpful response to my question.
Very unprofessional.
Let me help you with an adult and appropriate response: It would read like this:
Thanks for your question Don, it appears that perhaps you are accessing the Sony Vegas forum as well. Please bear in mind that final cut Pro is a very different program. However if you choose to use it, here is what I would suggest. Final cut pro has some excellent tools that should help you with your project. Unlike Vegas it operates in the following manner… I would suggest you… etc.
Sincerely,

August 25, 2009 at 4:11 am in reply to: Is there any hope for this footage with Vegas Pro 8?Okay Shawn… a bit simplified as a tube video goes but here you can get an idea what I am doing:

I am beginning to think that we are working with two different versions of Vegas Pro 8… or mine is defective or something.
Any more imput for me?
Thanks

August 23, 2009 at 6:43 am in reply to: Is there any hope for this footage with Vegas Pro 8?Hi Shawn:
I am going to have to definitely roll up my sleeves and do some homework on this one for sure! Those are a good number of steps for a total neophite like myself. The first obstacle I have run into is as follows when I follow these steps you recommended:
a. I select plugins Color corrector secondary
b. I drag this to my view screen which opens up the videoFX
Color corrector secondary screen/mode
c. I then select the eye dropper icon for select effect rangeNow the problem is that this tool is very inaccurate and instead of giving me a precise drawing instrument that I can use to select the blue unwanted halo surrounding the cockatoo I get a large rectangle that takes me nowhere.
Whats more if I select the Show mask feature… it then hilights a large rectangle area that is not even where I drew on the video preview using the select effective range tool.
I must be doing something wrong and may be missing some important steps that perhaps you may feel I know already? Just guessing and puzzled.
Thanks for your help though… I am one of those recipe type thinkers ie. first add sugar, then flour, then water etc.
I am good at that method… grin..
I am very appreciate of folks who are trying to help me and willing to do what I can to rescue this footage.
Cheers and thanks!

August 23, 2009 at 6:30 am in reply to: Is there any hope for this footage with Vegas Pro 8?Hi Steve:
This problem actually shows up in the original footage when you simply use RCA cables to connect the cam to a television set. Of course it also shows up in Vegas’ preview window as well on the timeline. I think the culprit might partly be my inappropriate use of Sony VX2100’s backlighting compensation tool. I am fairly confident I had this on during the shooting which was done in rather poor lighting.
Sometimes the backlighting tool can make the difference between getting footage of a rare species when the lighting is pretty poor and you only have one opportunity to shoot.
Thanks for your imput!

August 22, 2009 at 6:30 pm in reply to: Is there any hope for this footage with Vegas Pro 8?Hmmm… If I remember I shot this footage on an evening when the light was not optimal and used the poorly lit blacklit feature on my Sony DCR VX-2100 cam. I have gotten some nice footage with this cam on not so well lit situations but shooting in these cases just didnt pan out so well.
I was hoping there was some sort of tool in Vegas that either would simply take away the contrasty type of element to the footage… or like a surgeons knife somehow remove the blue halo around the birds. Both the white cockatoo and black one.
I wasnt clear on how you accessed what tools you used Theo. I am willing to toy around with this considering I wont be going back to Australia soon to get more clips!
Thanks folks and if anyone else has any ideas I would love to hear them too!

August 22, 2009 at 8:50 am in reply to: Trying to train DVD Architect to use a different route than C DriveMike:
That is precisely what my problem was. In being new to the software I had not checked the options section to locate the destination drives that DVDA was to burn to. Once I instructed DVDA to use my large D Drive then the whole project burned without an issue.
Thanks so much for your support and help here. I am sure at times it may seem like advise is unappreciated but certainly not in my case!
Cheers!

August 22, 2009 at 8:48 am in reply to: DVD Architect and working with large .avi files. Is there a way to compress them?Mike:
Thanks a million. Because of the new and unfamiliar territory I did not think to change the destination drives in the places you mentioned. Once I completed that I was able to burn my first DVD (with the exception of some aborted small projects) in DVDA.
I still have some questions but at least am up and running!
Thanks very much!
