Just to add to Enrique’s post, in addition to Vegas, Avid Media Composer 5 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 are also able to edit the EX .mp4 files natively.

You are indeed. Push the “status” button beneath the top handle and then use the SEL/SET scroll wheel or joystick to cycle through the various screens. the audio screen is the second one in.

First off, I’m not sure why you’re not able to install Sony’s Log and Transfer program if you meet the requirements. Don’t know if this makes a difference but are you running on an Intel Mac or a Power PC Mac?
There is another Sony program that does essentially the same thing and it’s called XDCAM Transfer. You can find this free program here:

It’s the sixth file download from the bottom of the page.

There has to be a way for a Sony Repair facility to flash an EX1R with English programming. After all, it’s the same camera.

Not unless you have a capture card like a AJA Kona board. Otherwise just bring the clips in as XDCAM EX and transcode to XDCAM 422 if that’s what you want to export with.

If you have the option of exporting to XDCAM 422 within FCP then you have that codec. Why XDCAM Transfer says you don’t is a mystery. You might try trashing the preference files for both FCP and the Transfer app and then trying your export again.
Your choice of export codec depends on what you’re exporting to. Don’t forget that you also have Pro Res at your disposal.

In the EX3 menu go to: VIDEO SET>YPbPr/HDI Out Select:
Your choices are:
- HD
- SD
- OFF
Then in the same VIDEO SET menu choose ‘Down Converter’ and your choices are:
- Squeeze
- Letterbox
- Edge Crop
See if those settings work for your SD output.

If Sony goes by past practice (as with the EX1R) there will probably be a cache record function on the updated EX3. Sony may even include SD recording.

Good question. I guess it depends on what you’re shooting and how portable you need to be. It’s easier to carry a smaller camera like the 5D but you’re limited to the 12 minutes per clip thing, overheating and marginal audio. If it was me I’d save the 5D for the artistic stuff and use the EX1 most of the time, even if I needed to carry minimal gear.
