No. it doesn’t make a new encoding.

Yes it’s the same compression. Both XDCAM Transfer Tool and Log and Capture Tool work the same way. All they do is use the same video clip and re-wrap it in a different “container” that Quicktime and FCP understand. To over-simplify, it’s the same present in a different box and wrapping paper. FCP likes blue paper and Avid likes grey (I think). 🙂

You obviously need to find an SxS card reader that can connect to your laptop via FW 400 or 800. I don’t know if anyone even makes that but you might want to check out Nexto DI who makes the NVS2500. This will allow you to back up your SxS media directly to a connected SATA hard drive without the need for a laptop at all.

Correct. But your editors will still not be able to do anything unless your portable hard drives are formatted in Mac HFS+ (Extended) because Mac computers cannot read Windows formatted (NTFS) drives without some help.

No they don’t as long as Calibrated Q .mp4 plugin is active.

Yes. For example, Calibrated Q will put a grey band across your video if you’re using their demo version.

That’s correct. We’ll need to wait for the next version of FCP before native EX1 .mp4 editing becomes a reality. There is a plugin available now that allows the FCP user to edit the .mp4 files natively. It’s called “Calibrated Q” but each FCP workstation needs its own copy, rather than yourself converting anything first and then sending it along to your various FCP editors.

Using the “Calibrated Q” workflow you could simply send each FCP house the raw BPAV folders directly from each card and they would be able to work with the .mp4 files without any transcoding. To make this as seamless as possible you might consider sending the BPAV folders on Mac formatted hard/flash drives.

If you drop 50p footage into a 25p timeline it will play in real time, the same as if you put interlaced 50i footage into an interlaced 50i timeline. 720p 50 is designed to play back the same way as 50i interlaced: 50 frames a second regardless of whether the frames are interlaced or progressive.
If you drop a piece of 25p into a 50p timeline there is no slow motion unless you add a slow-mo effect. Try it for yourself. The only way to get slo-mo is to do it in-camera by using the EX1’s “S and Q” recording function. This feature is more commonly known as over and under crank.
