There are 2 USB ports on the EX3 and the one you’re using is simply for transferring files back and forth between camera and computer. The firmware upgrade USB port is underneath the shoulder pad. Once the shoulder pad is extended a small access cover is revealed. Remove the cover to get at the 4 pin USB port.

I’ve heard that MacDrive for Windows is not nearly as reliable as NTFS for Mac So I would go the other way. Install NTFS for Mac on the Mac laptop ($20.00) but format all the external drives you want for your Windows machine in Windows NTFS. Connect the NTFS drive to the Mac laptop and transfer the EX files from laptop to the hard drive.

That was the method I would be using. But have you noticed that when you have sync set to OPEN in the canvas and you have playback set to cinema desktop preview in the View menu that FCP plays back the Viewer window with all the angles. If you could somehow record what’s playing on your second monitor you would have a duplicate of the Viewer playback for your animation reference.

Does the same thing happen when you’ve got SAFE RT selected? Usually a blurry playback that firms up when stopped is a symptom of FCP lowering the resolution in order to provide a smooth playback (no dropped frames) Going to SAFE RT tells FCP to play everything at full res no matter what. If your new footage resides on another drive from your old footage there may be a bandwidth issue, meaning the transfer rates are too low to support full res playback. If you’re using a USB drive, for example, that’s probably the issue.
The other thing to check is Quicktime itself. Launch QT PLayer, go to Preferences (not QT prefs) and make sure that there’s a checkmark in the box beside “use high quality video setting when available.

Before you start reciting more Myan poetry just go through the entire process from start to finish with a 5 min. test piece. See if the result meets with your satisfaction. Also the jury is still out on whether it’s more beneficial to apply the flicker filter before the down
convert to SD or after it’s in the SD timeline. I haven’t done any tests myself but the result may be different.– Don

The fast(er) and simple way:
1. Edit your HD project in an HD timeline.
2. Apply the flicker filter set to MAX on everything
3. Render and export a self-contained HD movie
4. Create an SD non-anamorphic sequence in FCP.
5. Drop your HD movie into the SD sequence.
6. FCP will automatically letter box and pillar box the movie.
7. Drag a corner of the frame in the canvas until the top and bottom of the frame is filled.
8. you’ll lose the sides of the frame but now it’s in the correct 4:3 aspect.
9. Render and export.
10. Go for tea/coffee.Post Script: the slow way is to create the SD non-anamorphic sequence and drop each clip into it and repeating the step in number 7. Then apply the flicker filter set to MAX, render and export. This takes up less storage space because it’s only one render stage but it’s very tedious.

No reason at all that I can see. As XDCAM Browser matures there will be more features from the other Sony programs ported over to it. I have no need at the moment for using XDCAM Browser, although I have it.
Sony seems to have made changes to the USA XDCAM EX micro site so it’s a bit easier now to find and download XDCAM related software.

If you have access to a laptop with an Express 34 slot, and with the new XDCAM Browser software installed, you can insert an SxS card and XDCAM browser will apparently give you the re-write life of the card.

The present version of XDCAM Transfer is at the end of its development and will not be updated. XDCAM Browser v.1.2 is the latest version, combining XDCAM Clip Browser and XDCAM Transfer. It will work in Lion. I don’t know if XDCAM Transfer will work in Lion because I don’t have Lion. If I were you I’d just assume it doesn’t and get used to using XDCAM Clip Browser just in case.
