You were right. The article is very informative. Thanks for posting the the link. I was espeicailly interested to know that programs like Premiere Pro use an intermediary codec to capture HDV and therefore can’t edit this format in its native environment. That would definitely slow down the workflow and final output quality.

Before you open the log and capture window go to: window/arrangement/two up. Now when you open log and capture the window will be a bigger size.

Don Berube mentioned that the Firestore FS-4 will be available for the XL H1 very soon, but of course will only accept an HDV signal, not HD. If I was to buy another Canon XL I’d like to use it for uncompressed 10bit and not HDV.

I heard that the Hitachi Deskstar drives are still pretty reliable in addition to the above mentioned Seagate drives. Is this a valid assumption? Anyone having problems with the Deskstar SATAs?

What you’re describing is sometimes referred to as the “Pleasantville” effect. Here’s a link on how to do it:

This is just a guess but FCP is telling you that the offending audio is not optimized for 16bit 48Khz, but is in a lower bit/sample rate. If you go to user prefs make sure the audio is set for high quality play back. Once that’s set you should see the render bar for the lower bit rate audio file in the timeline turn red. Just render out the audio before you use the print to tape command.

You can check at Graeme Nattress’s web site to see if his Standards Conversion plugin for FCP also works for HDV. If it does then that’s the way I would go if I needed to convert NTSC to PAL, etc. Your last two questions may also be answered at his site as well.

Okay thanks for the heads-up, Digi. Since I don’t have another program for this type of work at the moment, I’ll continue to muddle through with Protools. But at least now I know I wasn’t just blind and missing a preference somewhere. Thanks again.

Valuable hard drive space is taken up by any partitioning you do, just like the differences between an unformatted and a formatted drive. It doesn’t sound like partitioning is needed in your case.
