Give us a hint at what FW drive(s) you’re using and how they’re hooked up to your G4. FYI I use a G4 Dual 800 to run ProTools 5 in OS9 all the time, with 3 FW LaCie drives hooked up through a LaCie FW 3 channel PCI card without any issues whatsoever. I can copy anything between all the drives no problem.
Just a wild guess: is your FW drive a new one and have you made sure it’s formatted in Mac OS Extended?

When did these audio problems start? After you switched to Quicktime 7? Have you done any projects that turned out fine (no audio issues) using FCP4.5 and QT7? I just know that a lot of folks here have had to go back to QT6.5 running FCP 4.5 because they apparently don’t play nice together.

If memory serves, I think the iDVD limit is a time contraint, not a size limit. You’d be better off asking this question in the iDVD forum at http://www.creativecalf.net, since there’s no real iDVD forum here. I’m thinking that the time limit for iDVD is up to 2 hours now, but I could be wrong. Therefore, if your QT movie is 2 hourss or less you can just drag it into the iDVD window. Either nothing will happen, which means iDVD has accepted the file, or you’ll get a dialogue come up and tell you the file is too big.
Remember too, that the longer your movie runtime is, the lower the final picture quality you’ll get, because iDVD will compress it more to fit on the disc.

Try exporting your QT movie as self-contained, video only. Then export your audio separately using the “audio to .aif” command in the export window. Quit FCP, start the stand-alone Compressor app and encode the video using the same presets you used with FCP’s quicktime conversion settings. Use A.pack to encode the audio into an .ac3 file. Then you can bring both files into DVDSP as a set. Make sure both video and audio files are the same name i.e. “My Movie.m2v” and “My Movie.ac3”
If compressor does just the video without crashing then you know for sure that there’s an audio file in your timeline somewhere that’s corrupt; but maybe A.Pack will be able to blast through it without issue. Using the .ac3 file format audio will also prove to be more DVD player ‘friendly’, as the high bit rates of .aif audio tend to make some consumer DVD players choke.

No not at all. Just certain FCP prefs, and not all those either. Um, here’s a link to doing the preference trashing properly:

You can also get a free program that will do the same thing for you. It’s called FCP Rescue. Just Google it an it’ll come up.
But really, after giving it more thought I’m kinda wondering if it’s more of a quicktime thing rather than a FCP thing. Once you learn how to trash the prefs for FCP you night want to have a look at the QT prefs as well. Short of that you might have to re-install QT, because of the QT components within FCP that have gone missing, such as what you were describing earlier.

The fact that you didn’t start to have real FCP lag problems until you upgraded the Pro Apps software recently makes me think that there might be other issues with your G5 than just FCP. Two other things you might want to try, okay there’s actually three things:
– repair permisssions using Apple’s Disk Utility – should be done anyway as part of periodic system mantainence.
– run the program DiskWarrior to rebuild your startup disk directory, in case FCP is having trouble accessing different files, etc. because of possible directory corruption.
– perhaps your system cache and log files are getting bloated and need cleaning out. This will slow down even the fastest systems. There’s a shareware program out there called Cocktail that will clean out all that stuff and do other system mantainence as well. Unix systems (like the Mac) are actually supposed to be left on all the time so that these system cleaning chores run automatically in the wee hours of the morning. Trouble is, most everybody shuts their machine off and these chores don’t get done. Programs like Cocktail are designed to fill that gap. Just Google it and it’ll come up.

In case they were using FCP and fouled up the preferencees in the process, you could try trashing the pref files and restarting FCP to see if the export of your PAL movie gets done any faster.
Just another wild guess.
