Wow. I think you’re on the right track about re-installing FCP for OS 9. Very, very strange indeed. I’m thinking now it has to be a corruption within the FCP3 for OS9 program itself that can’t be fixed by trashing the pref files or any other quick fix you can try.

Unless you have a copy of DiskWarrior. You could run that to rebuild the directories of your system/startup disk. No video person should be without that program, anyway. Another possiblily is for you to do the “Rebuild Desktop” command when you first start up in OS9. Another one would be to boot in OSX, use Apple’s Disk utility to repair permissions, and in the File menu of Disk Utility will be the option to “fix OS9 permissions”. I’d do that one as well.

But really, it sounds like re-installing FCP3 for OS9 is the simplest solution. Just in time for Chirstmas. Or for the day after Thanksgiving. Up here on the Canadian West Coast we had our Thanksgiving several weeks ago.

    Best of luck

Since I haven’t started using Final Cut Studio yet because I was right in the middle of a project using FCP HD on my G4 Dual 800 and didn’t want to transfer over to my 2.7 G5 until that project was finished, I just realized something *try to imagine a little light bulb popping on just above my forehead*:

    1. You’re using FC Studio that comes with Compressor 2. Yes?

    2. Compressor 2 does the audio encoding now, as opposed to Compressor 1 that really didn’t do any audio conversion to other formats (like .ac3) but instead just compressed the PCM digital audio for the DVD, right? You had to use a program called A.Pack with Compressor 1 in order to encode .aif or PCM audio to .ac3 audio.

    3. Your greyed out or unaccessable audio encoding commands using QT conversion from within FCP are codecs inherent to Compressor, and not Quicktime. Correct? This is because Compressor 2 now does .ac3 encoding, the digital standard for DVD’s

Does this make sense? Have you tried to do audio or video encoding using the Comperssor 2 stand-alone app instead of going through FCP and using Compressor that way, a.k.a. Quicktime conversion? The stand-alone Compressor app will do everything you want, just like using it within FCP.

If the stand-alone Compressor app is still a no go then you might consider re-installing that program as well. Here’s a link to the Apple website that deals with issues concerning Compressor, although not quite the same problems you’re having. But perhaps the fix they talk about may also work in your case.

    Hi Jack,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but the reason is a whole ‘nother phone call 🙂

I wish I could be more helpful to you but I’ve never run across your particular problem before. If it’s this frustrating for me you must be going nuts with it. I’ve tried to duplicate your problem in OS9 but I only have FCP v.1.25 to try this out on, so it’s probably not the same. So far no luck in re-creating your situation. My sound control panel in OS9 offered up no clues either, because I can only toggle back and forth between system sound and my ProTools card, non of which speak to any differences between 32Khz and 48 Khz. I’m still on the case however, and if I come up with any revelations you’ll be the first to know.

    Josephine,

Sorry it’s taken so long to get back to you, but that’s another phone call 🙂

I’m pretty sure that the codecs that FCP uses are actually part of the Quicktime program. What ususally happens though, is that when a codec becomes unavailable it’s not that the codec is ‘missing’, it’s more a problem of Quicktime not recognizing other programs that need to use certain types of its codecs. For example, when I upgraded to a later version of Quicktime last year, the MPEG 2 codec had all of a sudden became unavailable in DVD Studio Pro 2. I had to do a reinstall of that program before QT would recognize it. I know this doesn’t help your present situation but perhaps now you ‘ll have a better understanding of how these pro-apps interact.

You mentioned that you’re using FCP v.5 and Quicktime 7. I’m assuming you’re also using OS 10.4, although you didn’t mention which version of OSX you’re using in your previous post. Is this correct? I’m also looking for a previous post here at Creative Cow where someone pointed to something at the Apple web site that addresses issues with pro apps not recognizing each other. So, stay tuned, I’m still on the case.

Just one more thing. If you’ve got a third party PCI audio card (you mentioned G4 with digital audio) plugged into that G4 does it have a software driver installed that you can access though a control panel? If so, make sure it hasn’t been changed to 32Khz. Just a wild guess.

Nope, never heard of a Mac outputting 48Khz audio at the computer end and having it come out at 32Khz at the other end. Do you have a DV camcorder you can plug into the FW cable just to see if it records @DV NTSC 48? If it does then you’ll know the problem has to do with your deck and not the Mac or its software. Also make good and sure your edit/print to tape prefs are set to DV NTSC 48Khz, although I’m sure you’ve done that already. Otherwise I’m at a loss, because I have no experience with dedicated DV decks other than the Sony DSR-11.

Okay, time to get serious. I’ll need you to divulge your system hardware and software before I can go further with this. Model of Mac, hard drives connected, internal and external. What versions of FCP, Quicktime, and other pertinant info you could supply me with. What version of the Mac OS you’re running. Hopefully you have some sort of dedicated media drive you’re capturing to and you’re not using the system drive for this purpose, which is a big no no. You don’t have any active virus protection software which would interfere with the capture/exporting process. If so, turn off any “auto-protect” or “auto-scan” feature. You have journaling turned off for your media drive and that your media drive(s) is properly formatted in Mac OS Extended. Bear in mind that I can only make suggestions on possible solutions based on available information you provide. I’m trying to look over your shoulder from a long ways away.

Since I’m on the west coast of Canada I’ll check here first thing in the morning, but I’ll be away untinl sometime in the afternoon. Since you’re working in PAL format I’ll assume you’re not living in North America, so I’m just advising you of the time difference between us.

November 22, 2005 at 7:42 am in reply to: Tiger question w/ FCPHD?

If you’re trying to run FCP 4.5 with Tiger, I do know that FCPHD and Quicktime 7 don’t play nice together sometimes. You will probably also need to re-install all your pro apps because there exists a certain installation order/procedure that should be followed in order for all your programming to recognize one another. But that’s about the extent of my re-install knowledge.

If you go to the Apple website you’ll find that so many people had to go back to Quicktime 6.5 to continue using FCPHD that they created a download for just this purpose. Mostly though, the re-install of QT6 was for those who unwittingly upgraded to QT7 and still wanted to run OS 10.3.9 and FCPHD. But the link below won’t apply to you because you’re running Tiger now. But it’s nice to have the link handy just in case……
